1986 300SDL Priming Injector Pump
I have a 86 300 SDL with Plant Drive WVO system installed. The veg oil filter had some vacuum leaks with the fittings which I believe was resolvedc by using steel and brass fitings in lieu of plastic. I filled the veg oil filter with as much diesel as I could and flipped it over to screw the filter on. I lost some diesel but probably 3/4 filled. Put new regular MB fuel filter on and filled that up with diesel before installing. Cracked injector nuts at the pump and at the injectors. Got a small amount of diesel out and tighened everything up. I've done this 4-5 times now and still can't get motor started. I checked the fuel pump and it is putting out plenty of pressure. I tried cracking open the outlet on the stock fuel filter and fuel is coming out. There is a lever on the side of the pump which was paralell with the injector pump yesterday when the car quit running. That lever which has a red " Stop" on it is now up facing toward the hood. Any suggestions on the proper way to bleed this system would be appreciated.

There is no primer pump on the OM603.
Unless you have made a hash of the system, no offense intended, fill the secondary fuel filter (oil filter looking device) with diesel and then tighten it up. Crank the engine until it starts. It mght take a while if you have a lot of air in the system. You might have to crank it for 30 seconds, wait a few minutes, then crank it again. How warm is the WVO you have put in the system?

We switch it over at 160. Are you saying that you don't need to crack open the injectors at all? I barely get any diesel coming out of the injectors. Shouldn't it be spurting out when I'm turning the engine over?

No you do not have to crack injectors- they are just tough to get primed. Do like LUVMBDiesels says.

Integrity of the the vacuum system determines how long the stop lever stays down after you shut off the engine. It can stay down for days. It should pop up immediately when you turn the key to glow or disconnect the the vacuum line from the shut-off actuator immediately above the lever.
I have no patience to let the starter bleed the system so I crack the injector lines a half turn and crank for 10 seconds at a time (glow relay disconnected). After each crank cycle I tighten the injector lines that are wet with fuel. All 3 of these engines I've worked on are primed by the third or fourth crank cycle. Sixto 87 300D |
