reverse gear ratio 1983 300SD

Why is it when I stomp on the accelerator in reverse my W126 wants to break my neck? Do the same in drive and not much of anything happens. And for some reason I powered through an intersection once from a stop at WOT and the tires chirped when it shifted to 2nd. It's never happened since.

It would be nice to have the same reverse gear ratio in 1st gear, even if it's a granny gear.

just something I have been wondering about for a while.

I'm not familiar with any transmissions at all, that I can think of, in which reverse isn't a slower gear than 1st. It makes sense to me; it's a rare time when you want reverse to be running as fast as low gear will take the car... it's an equally rare time when you want low forward to max out at such a low speed.

Here's a question, why would you stomp the pedal in reverse in the first place??

Probably just used to drive...

But really, I think it's just how these cars were built. Reverse in my 240D is snail pace if anything if I just idle it.. it wont "creep" in reverse like many other cars will.
