Proud new owner: 1977 Mercedes 300D!!

Hello everyone,

First timer. I just bought a 1977 Mercedes 300D today for $500. 168,000 miles, NO RUST. Future veggie car. Runs good. One issue: wont go in reverse, but I think a reverse-band adjustment will do the trick. If not, I'll sell it for parts. Thanks for the help everyone has already given me regarding Mercedes. This should round out my German car collection: 1966 VW beetle, 1999 Porsche 911, 1977 Mercedes-Benz 300D

Welcome, and a fine car to start the adventure with. Hopefully the reverse band adjustment will do the trick, but if not a tranny of that vintage shouldn't be much of a $$$$$ outlay. That NA 5 cyl is a great power plant if your expectations are in whack.

Odds of fixing the tranny are in your favor. It's not a big job- it just may be hard to see the adjuster depending on the transmission.

Please include your location on your profile- you might get some help that way (if you need it).

Welcome aboard.

the 77 300d was my first car....ahh the memories. My AC worked in that car. I miss the old climate control buttons.

Here's some pictures. 162*** miles, never been hit, only 2 owners I beleive. The passenger side floor pan behind the seat has two quarter size holes, no big deal. I'm located in Atlanta. The driver's seat has a spring sticking through, I sat down introduced myself and the car bit me in the @SS and ripped my favorite jeans. Oh well.

It runs!! I bought it on the sellers word that it ran. I bought a battery today and fired it up, sure enough it runs great. Furthermore, and not what I expected for a $500 car, everything including the AC works, though it doesnt blow cold. And yes, I'll have to get a new mercedes star hood ornament, know a good source for that??

The local junk yard needs to become your friend!
Nice job on getting it running. Now you need to search for Evil Servo!

I have never quite seen a street/neighborhood that looks like that.....
Are those houses, apts, condos? Talk about no front yard!

Do '77 300Ds have a 120MPH gauge? Norm's speedometer, a 1980 NA, only went to 85 MPH.
