How to compare parts numbers? (Muffler Question)

I need to know if a muffler from a CD-coupe will fit another W123 four-door of a very close year.

I was figuring I could maybe verify if this would work if I could verify that the parts numbers are the same for both parts. I don't know of any online source or parts catalog where I might be able to figure this out. Does anybody have a link or source I could check with?

You can go to http://epc.startekinfo.com/epc/ and get a free subscription to MB's on-line parts catalog.

For exhaust specific parts, it's quicker to check www.timevalve.com Looks like the downpipe and muffler are common but the middle section is different (because the CD has a shorter wheelbase?).

Hi,
Here's a link to Bosal, an German OE manufacturer...
http://www.catalogue.bosal.com/pages/exh_cartype_search.php?make=mercedes&model=230+-+W123&body=Coup%E9&cartype=&fuel=D&year=&search=Search

I filled in the W123 and coupé bits for ya!
Good luck

Quality compare : Eberspacher vs. Bosal?

The muffler that has fallen off my 300D is an eberspacher. I've seen Bosal marketed in parts oferings online right next to the eberspacher. Since the Bosal was usually cheaper, I thought that perhaps it's of cheaper quality.

What is the difference if any? Are the Bosals of decent make and longevity compared to Eberspachers?

Thanks.

Also... thanks for the links to catalogue and genuine mercedes parts numbers.

Turbo or non turbo? Provide your VIN

Non

Both my 300D and 300CD ares non-turbo.... don't have the VIN handy at the moment. I'd like to swap the CD's muffler over to the 300D, as the coupe may be a parts car now and I don't have a whole lot of money for a new muffler at the moment. They are only a year apart, if that.

Yes, both part numbers are the same.

Great

OK, great -- I'm going to give it a try.... seems like it should work.

On a related note....

I'm also thinking I might try to find a whole replacement door for my 300D instead of having bodyshop work done to punch out the large concave push-in from a previous driver incident (got the car with strong engine, very cheap). It's only on the door, so seems like I could just swap in a new door and get it painted, or get a lucky color match.

I'm wondering what I need to be warry of, and what range of years would work in a swap? How can I compare and know it's going to fit correct? Can I use an SD door? Mine is a '79, so would any door from '79 to '85-ish work? I guess what I'm getting at is how much the very core body styling (pressed metal dies, structural) changed over the 300D span of production?

Sorry, but I'm rather a newbie with these things...

Find your paint#, should be on a plate on the cross member by the radiator. then go to http://www.paintscratch.com/ and see what years that paint color was used then look for a parts car or 'wrecker' car. I'm looking for a blue door:)

Any W123 door should work.
