Which Harbor Freight injector socket?
Anyone know which HF injector socket would better suit my need to remove injectors on my 92 300D (2.5T)? I am going to need to dig in to do some diagnostics, and I see there are two types at HF that state they will fit Mercedes: PN 99878-1VGA is one, and 99884-3VGA is the other. Both are 22mm, but one is deeper than the other. If one is a better choice than the other, I'd like to know. I need to order their diesel compression tester, too.
Thanks! |
You sure thats 22mm and not 27?

Either those sockets are for gas injectors (I'm not familiar with them) or Harbor Freight has an error about the size. The diesel injectors are 27mm. That socket is available at ZDMack, Samstag Sales & check with Mercedes Shop as they also carry several special tools. I believe some have said they got away with using a standard 27mm deep 12pt. as long as the wall is thin enough to clear the fuel return tubes.

I just looked and it seems like every engine uses the same 27mm socket except the 606, 605 which use 22mm with a hole in the side to clear the return fittings. I'm assuming your injectors are on the side of the head rather than on top...

Autozone "Great Neck" 1-1/16 deep well socket 1/2 in. drive. It's 5.99, and works fine. http://www.autozone.com/R,575698/store,2823/initialAction,accessoryProductDetail/shopping/accessoryProductDetail.htm

I got a set of deep well impact sockets from HF that I used. It was an imperial set and the 1 1/16" was used on place of 27mm

BTW, the crankshaft bolt is 27mm too, so the socket can be used to turn the crank as well. It's a good tool to have.

Craftsman
I use a Crafstman 27mm deep socket. It was fairly inexpensive and has a lifetime warranty.

I just got a 27mm socket, you can buy/borrow it if it's the right size. I should be done with it by the time you get back
|
Thanks, everyone! I appreciate the help... good thing I didn't order the 22mm sockets. I was thinking that seemed a little small. Dan, I may take you up on the offer to borrow/buy yours when I get back, or just pick up a Craftsman or Autozone one.
I have seen a couple Benzes here in Kyrgyzstan, and the little buses that run around are all MB diesel-powered. Makes me miss my W124; I can't wait to get home and get her fixed! |
Yeah, I think the 22mm size is needed to take the injector body apart, but to take it out of the head it is 27.
I just got this darn expensive socket because it "has room for the return line nipples" but now I hear that any will do as long as it has room. Oh well, you can still borrow it. I'll only need it once. |
