Low power up hills

I am having a problem with my 85 300sd. When I am going up hill or when I press the accelerator to go into passing gear, the rpms seem to go up but the car slows way down. It also feels like it is coughing and gasping for air or fuel.

Is this a turbo problem, an injector problem, a fuel filter problem or what. How do I test for the real problem and how do I fix it?

Dave

Change the fuel filters first, then report back.

Does it GO into passing gear ?
Does it seem like the transmission could be slipping ?
Is everything just hunky dory the rest of your flatlanding time ?

Post '85 Diesels

Let's not forget that's the _only_ year mercedes used the stupid particle trap , it plugs up and the faster you run the engine , the less power it makes...

I know of one '85 that was purchased for $200.00 from a used car lot
" engine's junk " , I told my buddy to have the dealer replace the particle trap for free , he did and now it like all '85's (different trannys & final drives) is a real stormer .

So , if after replacing the two fuel filters and checking the shiphon from the fuel tank (the intank intake screen plugs with fungus often) it's still slow , give that a look .
