W116 1980 300SD: swapping motors--any suggestions?
I plan to swap engines/trannys between two cars and just wondering if anyone can offer suggestions.
How much does the engine/tranny weigh? Can I get by using a rented "crane" type engine hoist, or do I need a chain hoist to get more height? Thanks, -=-=-=Ed

I lifted the 4-cylinder engine (with transmission still attached, as per service manual) from my W123 240D with a crane hoist with no problem. After everything was disconnected, lifting the engine out was far, far easier than I expected.
The 300D is, of course, longer since it's 5 cylinders. If you leave the transmission in the car you won't have any trouble getting the engine out. I don't know if it's feasible to do that, though. As for height: I would have had a problem with height if I had not removed the lower oil sump pan before removing the engine. Otherwise, I wouldn't have been able to get it high enough to clear the radiator support crossmember at the front of the engine bay. If you don't remove the lower oil pan (or even if you do), make sure you protect that crossmember with a piece of cardboard or something so your engine doesn't bang and scrape against it. Someone who has removed the 5-cylinder engine from the W116 can probably give some other advice. Good luck. - Nathan '83 240D "Steiner" '00 New Beetle TDI |

A standard crane type hoist is adequate as long as it will hold at least 1000 lbs safely. If you need to tell someone how much the engine/transmission set weighs in american terms, it's about the same a an iron chysler Hemi. This will get their attention.....! The 116 won't be too much trouble after you get the hood off -- a 115 chasis is a PAIN.
Get the sturdiest hoist you can find -- you will have to lift the engine/transmission combo over the radiator support to get it out and back in -- you don't want the cheap flexible kind here. If you can find a rotary device that uses sling cables and allows you to control the tilt of the engine/transmission it will come in very handy -- you need to tip the front of the engine up at about 45 degrees to clear the radiator support and extract the transmission from the tunnel at the same time, and reverse this when it goes back in. It is better and easier to roll the car out from under the engine/transmission than to try to move the whole setup. Lower the engine to just above the floor before you move the hoist. Remember to take the kickdown wire off the transmission, and watch out for the sterring damper -- you can catch the bottom of the converter housing on it and bend the damper. Not really very hard -- total weight of engine is about the same as an american big block, plus transmission, so stay out from underneath and be careful where you put your hands, and you will be fine.
