1993 300d broken timing chain ?
I have recenty come across a nice 300d but for a broken timing chain . I am trying to determine whether it is worth the trouble . What is likely extent of damage when a timing chain snaps on that particular engine ?

IIRC, this is an interference engine. It all depends of when the chain snapped, at idle or driving. Bent valves and cracked pistons come to mind.

Hopefully a mis-diagnosis. Can you move the crank? and if so, does the cam move with it?

If possible, pull the valve cover (requires that the crossover air tube come off first) and inspect. A broken chain will be obvious; broken camshaft (a possibility) will also be obvious. Valve and piston damage harder to determine – engine could be toast, be careful.

Thanks - Thats about what I expected but did want to hear ( needs head and pistons - ie rebuild ). I really don't have the time for a l rebuild . I guess l'll call around and price used engines (not the greatest option either) .
