Loud thunk when starting

Lately, Max, my 300TD, has had a loud thunk when starting up. That's the only thing out of the ordinary I am hearing. Any suggestions about what to look for first?

Where's the noise coming from? Loose starter? Broken motor mount?

I don't think it's the starter and the motor mounts seem to be fine, too. I am guessing that it's something loose, though. It sounds like it's coming from somewhere around the rear of the motor or the trans. It "thunks" one time and then there's no other unusual noise after that.

Does it sound like a resonator hitting the chasis frame?

If the trans mount is beat, would it allow the starter to lift it?

That's what I'm thinking too.

Tom,

Talk to John about the flex plate breaking on Bruno. It could be happening to you.

That's a good thought. I just replaced the front one on the SEC, but haven't checked the one on Max yet.

Interesting ... Didn't you say you replaced the front disc Tom? Maybe something is loose.

EDIT: I see your answer. I was busy typing.

That would be at the rear of the car, wouldn't it? I don't think it's that. This is a more solid thunk than I think a resonator would make.

I won't use the word resonator -How about center muffler You didn't state where the noise was originating, and it's not always easy to determine. These cars can be full of creepy intermittent noises. My SDL has a faint chime (one time) that will occasionally sound off after ignition. Have never found the source and have since dismissed it as some sort of personal W126 hearing disorder that I have contracted.

I was making the assumption that the 300TD's resonators would be at the rear of the car like the ones (that used to be) on my SEC. The flex plate and trans mount suggestions sound like likely possibilities. I'll start there.

Flex plate isn't the same as flex disc. I don't think there are two flex plates, so 'front one' doesn't make any sense to me.

Sorry, I read it as flex disc.

Here's a thread with pics of a bad flex "plate"
