Injection Pump testing
Where do you go to have the ip pump tested? I am rebuilding my engine, I assume it would be a good idea to have the pump tested. Is there a rebuild kit I can get, then just send it out to be calibrated?
about how much should I expect to pay? Jim |

Add your vehicle to your Signature.
1) Gus Pfister - http://www.bayarea02.com/features/pfister-interview/index.html 2) Local Bosch service center. Gus runs ~$1,000.00 to rebuild and calibrate.

I believe most folks just stick the pump on and go for it, I do anyway

In the Fuel Injection shop I worked in years ago my Boss did not want us to do a "Test Only" on Fuel Injection Pumps partly because it would contaminate our Calibration and Lube Oil used to test the rebuilt Fuel Injection Pumps. Many shops feel the same way.
Other Factors are the if you take the time to test the pump and find out it needs to be rebuilt the customer does not want to pay for the cost of the test you just did + the cost of the rebuild. Lastly there is a Warranty issue. If a used IP tests OK in the shop and go back on the engine and shortly thereafter fails; the Customer blames the shop. You will hear "it was running OK until I sent it to you". I some Civil Courts they would rule that if you tested the IP you have to Warrant it. If you are not going to Warrant it they say you should not have taken the job.

If after you put it back on it is not working as well as you want it to get the IP rebuilt.

A friend with an old 616 powered van (30something?), older style, and he never checked the IP oil. The rebuild was 1k , he keeps an eye on it now

About 3 months after I got my car I bought a use IP. So I have a spare. However, I did not know the Oil Filter Housing has to come off to get the IP of so I have never put it on the car to test it and see if it works.

I have changed several pumps without removing the oil filter housing. I found that removing the transmission vacuum valve gives enough clearance to get the pump out and back in again. The worst part is the bolt at the rear of the pump and the 2 bolts that hold the bracket to the engine block.

I have gotten them out without much problem, just time consuming. I have not been able to reliably put them back in with the cannister in place. The rear bolt seems impossible to reinstall. Either way its not fun.
If you need a pump thats right off the test stand ..I have several. Just looking to get the $ I've got in them back. 250.00 plus shipping |

Yes, remove the three bolts in your picture and the bracket will come off. There is also a spring that attaches to the top of the bracket. I have been leaving the bracket attached by the spring during removal and installation. The spring is a little tough to get connected when the pump is already installed, but you can pre-install the spring to the bracket and guide the bracket into the correct position while installing the pump.
I know a guy that does not see the importance of the lower ip bolt and leaves the bracket off, then attaches the spring to the upper bolt on the engine block. |
