How do I tell what engine I have?
So I talked to the garage that installed the rebuilt engine in my SDL before I got it. They said it was a "factory crate engine". Today I finally got around to look at the engine number... but it wasn't there! The area of the block is completely flat. I sprayed all the gunk off with WD40, scraped at it with a screwdriver... it looks like there is actually nothing there.
Is there any other way I can tell what engine I have? I do have a #22 head and the fuel cut seems to happen at 4200 rpm. Thanks, -Jason |
Engine Number
The Official Mercedes Remans may only have the first three numbers still
remaining on the flat spot just in front of the Injection Pump. I.E. (in your case) "603" It seems someone in Deutschland files off the remainder of the Original numbers. OR maybe ALL the Original Numbers. If it's a "Caged Engine" [Brand new or Remanufactured] from Mercedes THERE WILL BE OFFICIAL PAPERWORK relating to the engine's Provenance!!!! (AND most likely a paper sticker on the top of the valve cover that reads: 603 010 XXXX 80 [the 80 or 88 designates a "ReMan"]) |
There should be a bar-code sticker on top of the engine block where it bolts to the bell-housing. I don't know what it means or how to decode it, but it's there.
My '91 apparently had the original engine, and a 22 head. There were no numbers on the engine by the IP, the only numbers on the block at all were cast into the block just above the oil pan, I believe there is a casting date wheel there. |
Check with carson357 or one of the professional techs how MB tracks serial numbers on crate engines for warranty. Maybe someone at Metric Motors (www.mercedesengines.net) can help you.

I was wondering if they shop installed a 3.5 or 3.0 engine. I found the data plate on the bellhousing and was able to take a picture of it. Thanks for the info guys!

It's a 3.5: 603.970

Yup, and the PN ends in 80 so it is a factory rebuild. I'll call up the shop in CA and see if they can give me any info on it.
