turbo problems?
How much side to side play should I have in the turbo shaft? I can feel a little play, but cannot feel the fins hitting the side. I am getting a squealing sound around 3000-3200 rpm. The noise will subside with more or less pedal. My tech investigated for over 4 hours and can find nothing else. They even drove the car with part of the dash out and a scope inserted into the engine bay. The sound is definitely on the turbo side. Investigation this morning shows the alt bearings seem fine, absolutely no play with the belt off. My concern is that jcd is describing very similar noises, and he has a 77 300d that does not have a turbo. Is there any chance this could be a transmission or vacuum pump noise. I have replaced the ac compressor, water pump and fan clutch recently. I feel no play in the ps pump either.

Doug:
Turbo's have floating bearings, so some play is necessary (and the shaft is somewhat smaller cold than hot!), but I don't know how much. More than a tiny amount, I suspect, is too much. How much axial play is there? And does the turbo turn freely by hand? You should be able to spin it easily, and the rotaton should be completely smooth, even if you press rearward lightly on the wheel while turning it. If it has 'catches' in the rotation, the bearings are shot. Also, if there is oil in the intake but not in the blow-by hose, the seals are shot, also usually the bearings. Bearing replacement only is about $400 in the local area at a reputable diesel service, if you have to sleeve it as I did (waited too long....!) it's more like $750. Exchange is about $1200 -- these are prices for my Volvo, I expect the MB to be similar. The cheap repair here is to check for a leak in the intake manifold -- escaping air can whistle at certain speeds and loads. I'm not sure how much noise an MB turbo makes normally -- my Volvo (and my mechanics) sounds like a police siren a couple blocks away, my 300D is nearly silent, and my brothers 300SDL is sort of in the middle. I suspect they get louder as the bearing play gets higher, but the Volvo was loud from the get-go, so was my sister's, so it appears to be a characteristic of those applications. If this doesn't help, look in the yellow pages for a diesel injection service place and ask about turbo bearing clearance -- they will have a much better idea! Peter

Peter,
Thanks for the reply. I am getting no axial play that I can feel. It was cold this morning (48 f) and the turbo would spin about 1.5 times freely with a good twist. I assume this was due to the cold oil. I feel no binding. I will check rotation while pushing and pulling on the shaft. Doug |
