Post Diesel W-123 Coupes

No , not a U.S. only car just 99 % of them were sold here .

NONE were made with manual trannies .

There's a 240CD that lives near me , I'd love to get it as it's still in full Euro trim .

Post Believe What You Wish But

They didn't as the 5 speed wasn't available in the W-123 line back then and no Diesel Coupes were made with the standard four speed manual tranny .

I believe mercedes had a special order option in europe at one time. Like the five cylinder diesel in a 240d shell with the four speed. A local aquaintance of mine has one.

If it is in as good of shape as you're describing, buy it, and if you aren't too far away (no location info in your profile) I'd pay about twice that much to buy from you. I have 2 engines that could easily be combined to build one good turbo OM617 to drop into it.

Seriously. An opportunity to build a turbo 5-speed 300CD, for less than 3 Gs? I'd be all over that...

I should probably update my profile. I live in SoCal and this yard is only about 30 miles from home, which is easily towable.

There might be lots of hoops to jump through to get the title, so I might just be buying part by part. (which will be more expensive in the long run, but worth it)

This car had REPO written on the windows, so it should be mechanically sound. I'll head back there on my next day off to negotiate. I'm not too big of a fan of the CD's myself, but I hate auto trannies and would be throwing the 5spd in my '78 sedan. If its possible to get it back on the road, I'll drop in a turbo 617.

I really hope I can get it for an early christmas present.

It's not on the tear apart yard yet. It's still in the waiting area, so I couldn't get a good inspection or talk to anybody about it yet.

could have been a euro 280CE with cloth interior and a 5 speed that someone put the 617 in and slapped the diesel badges on ..

Getting a title for a car from a scrapyard varies from state to state and from yard to yard. PNP will know what they are doing as they do this every day so it would be hard to buy from a better source.

Some yards do not have the permits to sell used cars, so they only have dismantlers permits or scrap permits. In this case they can sell you everything but the part that has the VIN number on it which is usually the cowl.

It can be easy or complicated. You will never know until you start the process. In this case it sounds like it would be worth looking into.

One last note: I have been in yards that have older cars and the owner just signs an affidavid that he has owed the car more than twenty years. In that case you get a real title. It all just depends on the yard and the state.
