1998 E300 Sunroof problem
Hello everyone....I have searched the forum but without, I think, what I need to solve this.....
Following some autobody repair (front end) (thanks, Ms. 98E300TDman), the sunroof will not open completely. It opens about 2 inches, then jams, somehow. My favorite repair facility says "very expensive"....so I am looking to try DIY in case it is something relatively simple.... I would greatly appreciate some guidance... thx everyone :) |

I'd be willing to guess your auto-open/close functions on all your windows are not working as well. All four should run up or down on their own after a full press and release of the button. |
Where are you located?? I replaced both of my sunroof cables it was fairly easy. I bet one got kinked and is popping out of the track. There are some online videos regarding the replacement of the cables. You could try googling them, they are included on the MB DVD repair manual

re-synch didn't work
I tried re-synching, but no luck. The left side appears to travel 1/2 inch further...I suspect it is getting in a bind.
I will try googling on cable replacement..... |
Dang, that's a shame. A re-sync usually cures those intermittant sunroof/window problems...

any luck so far with the sunroof repair?

Normally you can "help" them open by gently pushing on the front of the panel as the motor is trying to pull it open. Once it is opened all the way there are some plastic guides which hold the cables down and in their tracks and you will see one on each side, about halfway down the length of the opening. If yours only have one screw and one screw hole go to the dealer and get an updated part and use two screws on each. Mine had the exact same issues and it was because the cable would pop out of the track on one side. Using 2 screws on each of those plastic guides solved it. It was a cheap and easy fix (the best kind!). Good luck.

Thanks I will give it a try.
