AKA: Sound Encapsulation Panel, AKA: Transmission Belly Pan? Not a common find used, most cars that go to junkyards get their encapsulation panels destroyed when the guys there rip them off to remove fluids.

I have been looking for one for the past 4 years and cannot find a used one. They are available new, but have to be ordered and the last time I checked they were over $400.

I am still looking also.

Just goes to show you how some dealers like to take advantage of you when you want to order a special, older part for a Benz.
Who gave you the quote for $288? I may bite on that.

The front one is 400 bucks or so.

So 500-600 for the panels. Is there any benefit other than noise reduction? Seems to me that this would keep more heat in the engine compartment, however, has anyone else noticed that our SDL has louvers on the side of the engine compartment that open at high temperatures? (near the oil cooler)

I'll go back to '86 when a couple of Engineers at Mercedes were telling me about this new 124 turbodiesel: The idea of the panels is to control engine compartment temperature. There is plenty of airflow with the panels on, and clean air from the radiator. The engine heats quicker and stays up to temp, which is good for efficiency and engine life. Sound abatement is also good.

The airflow without the panel includes lots of high-pressure air under the car, competing with the air coming through the radiator. It also has more dirt for the engine, and more aerodynamic drag on the bottom of the car.

So in short; yes.
