air intake pic request for 87 300DT

87 300DT owners:

my air filter ingested quite a bit of water on monday to the point where the performance was really sluggish. i took the air filter housing and seal off to remove the part on the inside of the fender wheel well. here is the piece that i have (attached).

it appears that there is a companion piece that might have been discarded by the PO. i sauy that b/c there appears to be some kind of tape residue and the end of this plastic piece has sort of a bugled end. that suggests to me that there is a piece that you put on the end

pic request: can someone take a pic of this piece thats located on the passenger side fender wheel well arch? I'd like to know if there is a companion piece that fits onto the one pictured

thanks,
bob

I would help but have never seen that component -- how do you get at it? The accordion pipe from the air cleaner goes into the fender well and I've never tried to see what happens on the other side. I'll bet EPC has a drawing of it.

It's from EPC. I gave it my VIN ('87 300D sedan) and that's what came up . . . I make no apologies for the artists at Mercedes.

Yeah thats for the SDL. Possibly it had a rubber grommet on the end of it, I've never actually pulled mine out to see.

Or my broken red '87 either. Intake tube for the air cleaner sticks straight outboard into the fender well, opening has a soft rubber grommet/liner it slides into. Anything beyond that is buried in the fender itself.

124.133 Turbocharger Air Cleaner

Here's drawings from a Russian website that matches the air intake setup on my wrecked '87 -

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=124133%5F501&M=603%2E960&GA=722%2E317357&CT=M&cat=503&SID=09&SGR=045&SGN=02

Looks like someone may have done some mods to your intake system over the years - like swapping in an SDL intake setup? That would explain the tape residue - an SDL setup in a 300D, there wouldn't be any factory brackets to mount it to, and they had to get creative with tape to secure it in place.

There's a second page to the EPC that shows the 124 layout.

How does air get in that area to be drawn by the air cleaner? How to 90-up 300Ds with gills keep water out?

Bob, I'll pull the liner and take some pictures if you describe how to pull the liner.

Sixto, you are right, I didn't look close enough. The plastic fender liner is held in with screws and studs with plastic nuts on them, I think. It is all one piece, seems to me I removed it when I worked on the coolant overflow/vacuum reservoir project but never looked to see the air intake.

ok, problem solved. i thought i could get away with not re-mounting or re-creating new bolts to secure the ones that rusted out, but alas, i was wrong. it seemed that however under the vehicle aerodynamics worked, the front part of the fender liner would flap down, cause water to run up and probably got sucked into the air intake hole. not to mention, i did not recreate one of the bolts that sits almost under the intake. so today i used a step drill bit and redid all of the bolts to secure the wheel well liner. most of the holes I was able to thread stainless steel bolts from inside the engine bay and secure them down with nuts w/ large rubber and metal washers from underneath inside the wheel well. i drove through a bunch of puddles around my neighborhood and pulled the air filter. no water whatsoever.

guys, i am terribly sorry that i got some of you guys to look at something that should have been obvious to easily fix. but again, thanks for all your help. I will use more of the common sense brain cells next time
