You know, these days it might make sense to trade in a garage queen that never sees much action for one in a little rougher shape that you can drive often!!! [uh, we are talking about cars, right????]

Looked at W124 for Jimmy today. This time it was a gasser, a 1995 E320 that was advertised in the paper. When I called the seller of the car, he directed me to his dealership.

I arrived and the fun began...

The car is a 1995 E320 with 94k on the odometer. Non-ASR, leather, but no fancy options. I immediately noticed the horrible respray this car had. It was the same color, but with horrible orange peel, and masking marks a quarter inch off the trim. The interior was baked, and the air freshener smell was overwhelming.

Just for a basis of comparison to the Excelsior, I took it on a test drive. The idle was noticeably shakier, but the non-ASR car felt a bit faster. When the car was finally up to temperature, I have it a good romp to 60, and white smoke was billowing out the back. I pulled over to check it out, and was greeted with the unmistakable sweet coolant smell and hissing noise, along with the wet white smoke.

There were no maintenance records whatsoever, and all the fluids and rubber components looked tired.

So, what do you say, Jimmy? They're only asking $4995 for it?

Some pictures during a stop at the gas station. Notice the massive dent on the hood as well.

Green? Diesel?

Tyler called and told me about the E320. It was hard for phone call continuity because I had three 11 year old girls in the car.
He has that ability to tell a good story, and it would have been funny to see him driving this car whilst getting the "hard sell" from the Used Car Guy. Especially after the steam cloud, replete with hissing even. Ha!
Ralph sent me a link this evening but they want way too much for the car. Plus it is black, and dark colors are out, especially black!!
Picky picky picky.......
Husk has really wetted my appetite for a '95 E300, although I still will be considering '87 and '90-'93 too.
My job of 15 years ends in 2 days, so you'd think I would be pigeon holing some $$$, but then again, I'm seldom accused of being very smart......
I even caught myself staring waaaay tooooo long at an ad for a diesel W210!

1994-95 E420. Thats the engine you want, its almost as good as a 500E at about 1/4 the cost.

Of course a 500E or E60 is still the balls out W124 to get.

I saw a white 300D NA with passenger side hubcaps today. First time, I've seen this car. The guy was in the left most turn (2) lane, and I was in the "fast" lane. I gave him the thumbs up and said ...Nice Car ....

He said....You too.

Jimmy, we all know you like WHITE cars......

Sorry Hattie, I just meant there weren't any listed in the W124 chassis only the W210, not that they didn't exist......

Used car salesmen quotes of the evening.

Me: The car has been repainted poorly

Salesman: Its hard finding a car this old that doesn't have some body work done. Its not the prettiest, but it runs good, and is purdy darn cheap.

Me: It clearly needs a new head gasket.

Salesman: We can do that for you right away, no problem. I just need to talk to the owner. After we finish the paperwork, we can get it all handled for you.

Best One:

Me: Are their any service records?

Salesman: Sometimes we get cars with them, but most come from dealer auctions. Its a Mercedes anyway, you know they run forever, so you don't have to worry about it.

When I first pulled up in the Excelsior, he greeted me with, "Oh, you actually have a nice one." That's encouraging.

Aww man, c'mon, besides smoke silver, and green, black is one of the best looking colors on the MBs. Of course, there's the problem of upkeep, swirl marks and dirt are seen more easily on black cars, but they look SO slick clean! But then, there's the Texas heat...

At least check it out, you know that they say, once you go black, you never go back!

That is, unless the ultra rare low mileage, petrol green 1986 300D Euro with minimal federalization and all manual controls and all service records shows up.
