92 300D turbo LOTS of smoke (LOTS!)
I have 92 300D turbo with 298K miles. Lately, it blows a LOT of blue smoke through the exhaust. Engine runs and sounds OK, car is still drivable, but something has failed in the engine. WHere to start? Valve train? Timing chain? Thanks, Kevin

Sounds like engine oil. Was this "all of a sudden"?
It could be valve stem seals, worn rings, worn turbo seals, etc.

Yes, definitely engine oil. I can smell it. It happened suddenly. What do you know about replacing valve stem seals? After 289K miles, they are probably worn. (Not sure about engine compression... have not checked it.)

Would removing the cross over pipe eliminate the turbo oil seal cause? Have you tested for blow by? Oil cap test?
Whats your oil pressure? My 1990 300D had no teeth on the oil pump sprocket at 283K miles. Good luck!

Do check compression. Valve stem seals tend to seep more overtime, not all of a sudden.

Trying to think of things that would occur suddenly, causing a lot of smoke yet leaving the car drivable. Has this problem affected oil consumption and if so can you give us some numbers (miles per quart)?
The later 60x engines are not supposed to have the head or head gasket problems of the 603 but you could have a head gasket failure or a cracked head such that a cylinder is sucking in oil from a passage to the head. A cracked ring would also cause smoking but probably not as much as you are seeing (pictures?). Jeremy

Lots of 602s blow head gaskets. I'd say that's the first thing to check except you can't really check without pulling the head. If there's an oil leak between the head and block around the #1 exhaust runner, I'd say bite the bullet and pull the head.
