Just block off the EGR valve with the method of your choice; Block-off vacuum line to EGR valve, EGR plate, block-off at the exhaust manifold etc, etc, (I put a half inch copper pipe plug in the pipe that goes from the exhaust to the EGR - after you sand it down just a little, perfect snug fit. And for good measure, I also plugged the vacuum to the EGR - thanks to my Excessive Compulsive Disorder )
Then, remove the exhaust/fresh air flapper after the air filter housing by removing the two screws with a Philips screw driver. Save the flapper and screws in case you ever want to return the car back to stock.
Any pictures or diagram to show with this installation? I'm not familiar with where the EGR valve is...

Appreciated,

Andy

alphadeltaromeo - Sorry, I don't have a diagram of the EGR set up in our cars. But, does this help? This is not my car, but it shows where the EGR is...

alphadeltaromeo - My car is also a ’95 E300D – you can disable the EGR while having everything still looking stock. No need for the “elephant” hose and filter attachment like the ’96 and later model years as their EGR’s are lots smarter than in our cars.
This is how I blocked-off the exhaust to the EGR. However, you can take the easy route by just plugging-up the vacuum line on top of the EGR valve with a BB, a set screw, a golf Tee, etc, etc,
I used a half inch copper pipe plug to plug the EGR pipe– I had to sand it down just a little to make it fit perfect.

Then, remove the flapper inside of the fresh air/EGR exhaust-mixing-tube-thingy by removing the two screws with a Philip screw driver.

This is a picture of the flapper removed. Put everything back together and you’re done. No one but you will know that your EGR is deleted.

Well, before this mod, I used to drive with a frown on my face. Now, I drive around with a smile
Seriously now…I parked my car for a few weeks because it started to have some performance issues like the OP; car started to smoke, started to take longer to get up to highway speeds, car would backfire intermittently, idled pretty rough when first started, brakes squealed like a raped pig at every stop and my fuel mileage went down the drain.
The EGR is just something I did on the side while I had the car up on blocks and did the other work on the car. All is well now and the car is running great. However, I couldn’t tell you what part if any the EGR delete has played in making my car run better, other than knowing that my car is breathing much better and that all that soot is going out the tailpipe and not back into the engine.
If you take your intake manifold apart you will understand why deleting the EGR is a good thing for your car.

Hi Terry
I just joined this post as I'm having a problem with my 99 300TD (that I am madly in love with). You sound very familar with this car. Would you be willing to let me ask you a question? Connie

I got the car in good running order and added an Schatz Avantgarde grille (the price was too good to pass up, and I had a cracked grille)

sorry guys I will get a better picture in the morning, There are two types of grilles (you both probably only need the grille insert portion instead of the whole grille)....One is the S-Class style (Avantgarde) the other is the stock type..
