I have an 82 300SD and last night it started clicking in the right rear so it's time to get some new axles. any ideas on the best place to find them i haven't had any luck so far.

You can rebuild them depending on how many miles are on them, rebuilding them isnt too hard. You can buy some chinese ones that you can just bolt in.

The axles on my wagon are from here:

I've heard good reports from others too.

Try backing up when you hear it..... while you order the new ones..
this would take the ( big ) noise out of mine on the 81 wagon for hundreds of miles...

Mine are from CVJ in Denver, they're good. Results of axles from local suppliers selling rebuilds of unknown heritage have been mixed.

One thing CVJ told me is that the clicking does not mean imminent death. You can drive for thousands of miles with bad axles before replacing them (I did – wasn't my idea but I was away from home). So don't panic, take your time. Lots of threads here on that subject.

CVJ Denver a couple years ago and still working (3 year warranty).

Here's a boot replacement video if so inclined. I think you would have to find what boot he used as I heard some did not work.

The CVJ axles in my car went out after only two years. Even more frustrating is that I specifically purchased them because of the rumor that they last longer than most others. This weekend, I will be swapping them with the Advanced Autoparts axles (whoever makes them.) If I am going to be crawling underneath my car every other year to replace axles, I'd rather deal with a place down the road than a someone 2,000 miles away; shipping isn't exactly low cost anymore.

You might want to check the local Auto Parts chain stores. They sell rebuilt as well as new made in China Axles.
I have rebuilt Axles from one of the chain stores that have been on the care for 1.5 years and no prblems. However, this represents about 3,000 miles as I do only local driving.
At the time the China Axles were not know to me or as availble by as many sellers as they are now.
Some Members have had a problem due to the spacing shims and the radius on the China Axles not being compatable. If you want to look at a thread concerning this one of the members was, fruitcakesa.

Once they start clicking, its futile to rebuild them, the joint is already compromised.

These are the same kind you'll find at your local Advanced Auto or NAPA- I used them on my 300D and have had no problems in the last 4 months or so:

These are made in Germany according to MB original spec, according to my correspondence with the seller:

Looks like by the picture, the first seller has Annular axles.
The second seller shows homokenitic axles.

With the Annular axles the Diff doesn`t have to come apart, except when first installing these axles.
Much easer to replace.

I got the advance chinese axles for $140 for the pair but the original factory shims had to be ground down to fit. Otherwise the install was straight forward and with only 3k on them no problems yet.

I've been looking for axles too. Seems like not many places offer axles for the SD model.
