Power Loss

Hope you guys may be able to help with this one.

I just got back from helping my wife who was stuck on the highway after our '84 300CD completely lost power and pretty much ground to a halt. It wouldn't go over 10mph and up hill the car was almost rolling backwards.

It took us a few tries to get it home everytime it ground to a halt we let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes then it would start up and get moving up to 50mph, although, very rough. The temperature here is around -25C. I changed the inline filter recently.

Any ideas?

Sounds like clogged fuel filters, or gelled fuel. Did you change BOTH fuel filters?

Foolishly I only changed the inline filter...I'll grab a spin on filter tomorrow. It seems likely that it is a fuel gelling or water in fuel problem.

Your diesel stations should be selling winterized diesel in your area by now but perhaps a bottle of your favorite anti-gel additive should be dumped into the fuel tank and a second bottle to fill the new secondary filter when you install it.

I added some standard diesel additive to a full tank at the weekend, I'm unsure of the quality.

Can anyone reccomend a good additive for winter driving? I have a can of Lubro Moly diesel purge I was going to use for diesel purge. Is it possible to use this as an additive?

Power Service in the white bottle is one of the more common fuel antigel additives in the states. No idea if it is sold in Canada though. Surely there must be several brands sold up there, eh?

There's a lot of diesel additives up here, I'm not sure of the quality...all of them have the generic blurb on the back claiming to do wonderful things for your diesel engine.

At this point, I would concentrate on the antigel properties, and not worry about all the other wonderfulness.

I used to drive a 200D in Michigan winters, so I understand what you are up against with the cold.
