Strange new noise

Hiya team,

So I tried to up the '85 other day, without really considering the temperature (-20 C). Gertraud didn't look favourably upon this, and refused to start. So I glowed. And cranked. Ad nauseum. Several glow cycles and cranking attempts, and a hefty jump later, she finally did turn over under her own power, but with an odd new noise. It sonds kind of like a gasser with a hole in the exhaust manifold, like a "putt-putt" sort of noise, but it's coming from the IP sid of the engine, not the side with the manifolds.

Any ideas? Could super cold cranking cause an exhaust manifold gasket rupture? Could it be something exotic, like some funny seal or other component like in the vacuum pump or SLS pump?

Any ideas wold be appreciated.

PS we now plug her in at night (guilty facial expression-she already had a heater), and glow mightily before cranking

Is the noise constant? Doesn't go away after things warm up?

There are no exhaust or intake parts on the side where the IP is located.

So it does not go away once the car is warm? I don't see how cold cranking could cause any gasket problems. You do have a correct antifreeze blend in the car, yes?

I would check things like the vacuum pump with a mechanics stethoscope to see if you can find the source.

Yes, bgkast, the antifreeze blend is definitely correct, I've got HOA coolant mixeed in the correct proportions for a minus 40 C mix. Also, I have decided that there is a corresponding loss of power associated with this new noise. The acceleration is now not as peppy as it used to be, even once the car has warmed up. I guess I am afraid that something in the injection pump is bunged up, and that might be beyond my level of expertise to fix. Of course, there is a "fresh" engine in stinky...

The EGR could be stuck open or leaking.
