How do I remove the lower plastic exterior door panels on my 1987 300 SDL? Are there clips, screws, or bolts on the other side? Do I have to remove the inside door panel to get to them?

In the end of the door, you will see two phillips screws. Remove them, and slide the plastic rearward, it will come off. Opposite for the rear doors IIRC.

I removed the panels. for future reference the following is the procedure.

- remove inside door panel
- locate plastic 8mm nut and remove it (located on the end of the door
- gentle pull at the panel to release the clips and pull it away from the door
