Well, guys, here is my two cents worth. I know absolutely nothing about taking apart the transmission. However, years ago I did take apart a Borg-Warner T10 transmission (4 speed) that I had put in a '57 Chevy. I had previously removed and repaired the stock 3 speed Chevy transmission that came with the car and it was easy; I continually ate up the synchronizers and kept replacing them with used ones. The 4 speed was a bit more complicated, seems like it had some or some more keys that were hard to deal with, but I laid everything out as I took it apart, had some intellectual help from my dad, and got it put back together again.

The long and the short is - it is probably not too difficult to take apart and repair if you have some sort of book or pictures and maybe help from someone looking over your shoulder.

After you rebuild it once, you are the boss. You will know absolutely everything about that transmission and any future repair will be a piece of cake.

Again this experience is from about 45 years ago, so take it with a grain of salt. I was always afraid of automatic transmissions because I never took one apart - but I still feel pretty competent about getting into a manual tranny. I may be all wet and things may have become much more complicated with manual trannies today so again - take this with a grain of salt.

Manual Transmission Repair

There might be someone on this forum that can point to the 4 speed transmission tear down procedure....

OK "Yellit",
I'll transfer the information I dug up and sent you OFF-LINE... I'll post the pertinent parts here!
JEBalles,
I have a 2-page parts blow up for what looks to me to surely be a manual tranny. These blow ups are labeled 716.0/716.1 and are in a manual of nothing but such blow ups that is labeled ... " Catalog 'G' " dated 11/79... and it lists the 616.912 engine which was in the 240D(s) from 1977 to 1983... so that looks like it applies to your model & year.

I have also found a link on the " Russian WebSite" that you might find of interest for it looks very much the same as the parts blow up diagrams I described above. Take a look at at these link addresses:

[1] http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=115119&M=616%2E916&GA=722%2E108&GM=716%2E002003&L=760%2E101++++++++++++++765%2E700&CT=&cat=001&SID=26&SGR=001&SGN=01
Note - this was found in the section for the 115 chassis models!

[2] http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb2.asp?TP=1&F=123123&M=616%2E912&GA=722%2E117404&GM=716%2E005210%2C214+++++++717%2E400&CT=F&cat=222&SID=26&SGR=015&SGN=01

This WebSite often has a complete, matching, table of part numbers corresponding to the 2-digit part numbers you see on the diagrams... but this one did not.

Let me know IF you are still seeking parts blowup for your 4-speed manual tranny... and also give me the car's VIN # IF you are.
Then I might be able to find more information!
I do not have any stick shifters among the MBZs I have worked on.
And finally... I have a CD set of the W123 chassis and will look there to see IF there are any manual sections that might help!
Contact me OFF-forum IF you want further information along these lines.

Regards,

Yeah, those pictures are in the Haynes manual. I have a 716. 210 model transmission, which is significantly different. Thank you, though.

For those of you following this: I have decided I don't want to buy a new transmission. I can get factory new parts for my transmission, so I'll just repair. I don't need the car, so the time's not an issue and it'll be a learning experience. Not to mention I'll now know my way around this transmission, so any further fixes will be easy and I'll also know the wear of the rest of the parts. All things considered, it's probably better that I just replace it, but I choose to ignore the advantages. In this case, can anyone help my in the gearbox disassembly?

Update: called the dealer again, and another dealer. Turns out they actually don't make the output shaft anymore. Does anyone have a shaft they'd be willing to sell me? Or does anyone have a complete transmission in eastern Mass?

And does anyone know if there is a difference between the 716. 210 transmission that I have and the earlier steel-bodied ones? As in, could I put one of those in no problem, or would I have to make modifications?

Transmission

Might want to call Moser Engineering to get that shaft rebuilt....

Probably be the fastest & inexpensive way to go since there are such limited parts for these...They have a website somewhere...They do shafts for all the 4 wheel drive folks.....

At least find out how much they charge and the turn-around time.....
If you find another transmission in the meantime.... all the better....
I think I am going to start looking myself in case my transplant is bad.....may rebuild mine anyway after looking at the pics of those busted synchro rings......

The older one will bolt up, I am sure, but there are differences in the rods (which point the other way) . Not sure if the shifter mechanism is different on the early ones- anyone know?

I don't think earlier steel bodies transmission are going to fit, because of the shift links...Maybe this site could be helpfull? (if you don't know it already):

http://www.detali.ru/cat/oem_mb0.asp?TP=1

Your 1983 240D manual is 123.123 chassis

I'm surprise you cannot get the output shaft anymore

Good luck!

I had too swap the different style trannys once and rather than make another round trip (100 miles) to the wrecking yard to get the shift rods that were different, I swapped the side plates. Not sure what its called, the plate with the three shifting levers attached to the shift forks. Worked fine.
