Wooooooow that actually looks really cool/nice! whoever did that mod did it wonderfully. Weird seeing a 220 like that!! Looks great though, awesome that you bought it!

Good luck with the engine problems, hopefully it's not too much of a handful!

I had this "Elcabenzo" on my ebay watchlist and probably would have made a serious attempt at winning the auction, but after carefully examining the photo's , I decided to pass . It looked to me like something was not right about the bed ...like some serious bodywork was needed. I'd rather rebuild engines than do bodywork,so the engine was the least of my concerns, but Jay, I hope it was just poor photograghy...you have a very cool vehicle either way.
I agree that the overall implementation of the conversion looks well done, like a coachbuilt. I think the previous owner said it was done by a dealership in Kansas city,
Star motors perhaps? Maybe a shop/promo truck. Whatever the case my be, I hope thet Jay will keep us updated as his project progresses.

Talking Engine update, It Is Alive!

When I first got the engine turning over I thought maybe it was terminal, running on three and major smoke. I decided to do a quick compression test and found only cylinder #2 dead. So I pulled the head and found that the pre combustion chamber, exhaust valve and glow plug were all damaged. I guess that the glow plug failed first, making all of them non functional and someone started using ether to start it. Then maybe there was an ether explosion that took out the pre-chamber and exhaust valve. So I lightly cut both valve seats, replaced the valves, pre-chamber and glow plug and re-installed the head. Now I was hitting on all four but the smoke was bad. Then I saw the engine oil in the vacuum pump outlet line! With a new diaphragm installed in the vacuum pump the engine is good!

So, the diesel stays! It is a 220D motor with 615 cast into the block. When the head was off I found no ridge at the top of the cylinders. Couldn't even catch a finger nail. There were no carbon buildups, even on the intake valves. All valve seats good, timing chain good with good timing mark alignment. I was able to purchase a full set of eight ATE NOS valves from an excellent eBay vendor at a great price. All the other parts are from Autohauze in Arizona. I don’t have the pre-chamber removal tools or the ability to cut valve seats so I had a local independent shop, German Auto do that for me. He was very kind and even encouraged me to witness the final valve lapping and seat to valve face contact area inspection.

Total parts and the paid for labor is about $400. All indications to me are that there is at least 100k miles left in the motor. I have not done a post repair compression check yet. I suppose it would be a useful baseline to have.

Next job is to replace the floor pans. Notice that I did not say repair. That’s because there is a lot of damage. I have procured a 1973 280 with a ruined engine, (it dropped a valve into # 5 cylinder) and when found “years” ago the valve rocker cover was left off. Anyone need a core? I have no idea how the cylinder was damaged.

Diesel 1 Gas 0

Jay

The truck was built by Star Motors Ltd, an independant repair shop and used dealer in Kansas City, Mo. There is bondo and there are some trouble spots but what the hey, it's all good! Maybe by summer I will repaint, any better colors than the metalic red?

I was over at Axel's shop (star motors in Charlston SC) in 2005 for the M-100 group meet. He had a beautiful blue W123 pickup conversion. It was very well done and had perfect interior.

I suspect by the decals that this car was the predecessor to it.

Cool little p/u Jay! Doesn't look like a hack job either. Glad to see the old diesel came back to life, too.

Yes, but takes a solid 20 seconds of cranking. Or a little shot of ether. I've done a no glowplug start down to 40 degrees, that took a little longer, and killed starter #1.

my cummins doesnt have glowplugs, and it starts down to the teens ok(it doesnt have a grid heater, ether

but an engine that is designed for GP's should have them. they are not too much $$ for our engines.
