240D Crashed & Total..Now what.

About 2 weeks ago I crashed my 82 240D manual trans. I had posted a thread about it and have been waiting for the insurance to work itself out. Now it looks like they will total the car. They said they would pay out about $2500 to me but I said that value is too low. I had sent comparables in my area that shows it around $4000. We'll see what will happen.

My question is, if they do total the car regardless if its 2500 or 4000, and if I was interested in buying it back, what would be a good price ?

The car: it was bought in SF, CA 2 years ago and driven back. She runs perfectly. The engine is in good shape, starts below zero just fine, runs and idles smooth. Everything works, cruise, defrost, etc. Manual windows, 4 speed stick, 240k miles, paint is good, barely any rust (I fixed the small holes), interior is good. Basically, the whole car is great, the only bad is what you see in the photos. I'm thinking of buying back to sell as parts or sell the whole car for someone else in the area. Someone did mentioned that they might be interested. I don't know if I have the time to fix it myself. Oh, the car does run now. I have to verify that again.

If anyone is interested in getting it, let me know. I'm sure it would be a good fix for someone handy and has a heated shop. The car is in Minneapolis, MN.

Looks like what you need is what the "body guys" call a "front "clip". A friend of mine bought a manual, Euro 300D that looked pretty much like yours and I had a 123 the same color, with a blown eng, which I bought cheap for parts. Hes a real car pro, lift in his shop and all, so we did a trade and he wound up with a nice car and I wound up with a bunch of body work on another 240D. Point is a "front clip" could be found if you could do the work or find someone.

Same thing happened with my 240d. They wouldn't pay me more than 2200 for it so good luck on your side, let us know how much they decide to settle for.

Thats a clean engine. Hate to see these guys in wrecks. May I ask how fast you and the other driver were going when you got in the wreck? How did his car look after the accident?

The insurance offered to "sell" the car back to me for 200 dollars. Of course I accepted. If your insurance does anywhere close to that, I would accept. You can always part out the car for way more than they will buy the car back for. Of course if you got her on the road again that would be even better. Looking at the damage, it really shouldn't be too bad, and if you dont mind 100% perfect results from a body shop, it would probably be quite cheap to get it repaired.

I was on the road alone. We had a couple of ice storms here Mpls, MN a few days before that. I was on the highway getting ready to connect into the freeway, not really a ramp but much wider since there was about 4 lanes. The rear wheel spun out on some thing slick and drifted sideways. Then caught a dry patch and push the car at and angle. I didn't response fast enough and hit the 5' high concrete median divider at about 45-50 mph. I don't think that wall moved an inch ! I'm not hurt and feel pretty lucky, just some soreness here and there. That's my most dramatic accident ever.

A front clip would be firewall forward, would require R&R of everything in the engine compartment, reallignment of the front end, and you might as well replace the respective front end wear items while it's apart. May be wrong, but if your alignment is OK, you might be looking at new fender, hood, valence & paint.

I think you're into a lot more than sheetmetal.

The lateral displacement of the front bumper strongly suggests that the unibody frame rails have been bent.

This car is effectively totaled.

Maybe what my friend got wasn't a "whole" front clip as I remember he didn't include the fir wall, I can see that getting complicated. Its more than I could do but my friend didn't fool with the firewall.

Rats ! That's too bad. I really liked that car.

The rest of the car is still pretty solid. I hope someone will find it useful.

Thanks.

Hit a concrete block wall going 45-50 mph? wow. Damage to the car, and you, sound not bad considering the accident.

Makes me feel better about driving my car lol, I have been concerned because the lack of airbags, and so on.

When I was young and dumb, I rear ended someone because I was not looking and didnt see the light turn red. I hit the guy going about 15 mph. The car damage is very similar to yours. But I was driving a Hyundai Accent lol.
