On the rear end of the IP there is a support bracket, at least there was on mine. Leave the bracket fastened but "slack" of the nut.
Diesel911 is right about the injection lines, better to undo at the top. The lines will stay full of fuel and save a lot of engine cranking to fill the lines and start. Remember to keep it very clean. If the engine has been rebuilt the pump may be installed a bit of the mark. I got mine back from a reputable MB recommended rebuild company with the IP off by one tooth.

update!
Well I haven't done much with this, however, I have tracked down a new mechanic to work with who is willing to be a little more helpful in getting my smoke issue figured out.
At this point we're starting with the injectors, they certainly nail at cold idle and even a little beyond that. I'm gonna run some Purge through the them and see what happens. Basically everything checks out except for the possibility of chain stretch, incorrect timing, and bad/worn/dirty injectors. It still makes me wonder about my previous mechanics, who upon being questioned about the smoking, said that it was just a smokey car, nothing to do! They didn't even mention the injectors, timing chain, anything! The work they did they did well, but, I need a mechanic who is willing to be alot more forthcoming about things! I begin to wonder, is it just because my car doesn't look good? I mean, its a beater, but c'mon, I'm paying you to do the work! mark in Portland |
