W115 4spd to W123? and other junkyard stuff

I've been looking for a manual for my wagon for a little while now. Went to PNP today and there was a 220 W115 with a 4 spd. I wanted to say it would bolt up to the 617, but would like to confirm before purchase.
The car was pretty rusty and had clearly been sitting for a long time (1999 inspection sticker). Shifter itself was gone, rods still there but, couldn't seem to get it into neutral by messing with them, so no spin to check for weird noises. Drained the fluid and it came out smelling normal, fairly dark brown, didn't appear to have any water contamination. Clutch pedal was there and all lines still connected. There was a little oil seeping from the side cover.
Any thoughts? Do y'all think it's worth pulling or would it make my life much easier to hold out for the manual from a 123?

On a different note, I'm also looking for a replacement OM617.952 for my wagon (original started knocking with 180k). When I finally find one that passes the visual OK, I'll do a compression test, check for turbo play, and I figure I should look under the valve cover and check the lash too. What else should I be doing? Wouldn't want to have another dead one in a couple months.

Thanks guys

4-speed from a 220 not a problem

The trans I have in "Stella" came out of a 220. I believe it's the same as the 240 4 speed. It works fine!

I didn't do the conversion so I ca't help you there. If you need some measurements, let me know.

The early 123s trannies are the same as the late 115s IIRC. Later 123 trannies are different and have an all aluminum case and integral bell housing.

It should work fine. The side cover may need a seal.
