DUDE! That sux so bad man. **** i wish there was some way to fix what has been done. Try to call them and tell them you have heard bad things but have no choice and that you want some type of insurance.

Its tough to find a decent OM617; I've been looking for one for my G-Wagen, I want something 100% reliable and any used motor will always have a certain number of questions to it.

The metric motors are probably great, but the price is just a bit out of my range.

The adsitco price is way better, but they have such a horrible reputation I wouldn't want to spend all the money and end up getting a Hyundai motor back...

The option I'm personally leaning towards is a rebuild by a local, trusted rebuilder. I was quoted $3000 if new pistons are not required, or $5000 with the new pistons. Something like that might be an option for you.

I'm not sure if anyone has a better idea to get a 100% motor.

The re and re for the motor would take you and a friend about 10-12 hours if you hadn't done it before. You can usually rent the specialized items (engine lift, jackstands, etc) that you'll need for the job. Doing an engine swap is not difficult, its just a matter of taking it one step at a time.

Cheers,

Michael

I don't wanna be the vicarious guy on this one!! Too much angst and potential expense. How many categories of bad things are possible with a 123 engine rebuild?

Skipping out on parts......a china made timing chain and not a german one? LOL no but really stuff like parts is most likely where to cut it short.

Also can someone input what exactly bad has gone wrong so our friend here has something to watch for? Im sure if you have a big problem soon enough after getting the motor you can sick your crazy boss on them Also insure it to the MAX some how.

You guys are welcome in Roswell. Landlord's son has tons 'o tools in the garage below my humble apartment (even has cherry picker with a truck engine hanging from it) is a nice guy and I'm certain he'd share.

Here's a quick pic of Helga the week after the suspension rebuild and about two days before the timing chain ripped her heart out (and a couple months before back yard mechanic ripped out bits and parts indiscriminately).

Dan's???

i think that's the name of the shop on Eubank just south of I40 in ABQ that works on MB. He's a pretty honest guy. there are a couple other shops that have good reputations in ABQ.
no idea what they would charge to install a motor.
my car was maintained by the indy in SF by PO that cant remember the name but it is in good condition ... not screwed up.
good luck....

My favorite machinist talked to the guys who do the motors for Adsit. They are in Muncie, not that far from here. He said that they don't replace the sleeves but simply bore it out and install new pistons. This was a few years back so its possible that thats not what they are doing now in any case.

If thats the only issue, you probably will get good service from a motor, it just won't be done the way mb does it and it probably won't last 500k til the next time it needs rebuilding....maybe only 325!

you'll probably be just fine.

In this case I would not look a gift horse in the mouth, Tell your boss thanks a million and go on down the road.

BTW, thats a hellofa boss you have there!

If you are still looking for an engine, call Mickey at Jim's Fine Cars in Albuquerque. Unlike all of the other indies in town, he is a factory trained Mercedes mechanic (he is also factory trained Porsche). He won't do you wrong.

The Don- the whole point of the engine rebuild after the meltdown and all the dough on suspension is to NOT buy someone else's set of impending problems.

TWalg - thanks the glimmer of hope on the Adsit rebuild. If that's okay and the install is good (I think THAT part will be okay - indy in Santa Fe is good) I guess I can start losing sleep over... tranny, turbo.... any way to gauge remaining life on these components while the engine compartment is barren?

Paint's not great and there are a couple long creases and a bunch of dings - no real dents - but no rot whatsoever and very, very little rust anywhere. Interior is pretty darn good too. So with the new suspension - entirely - new rubber, "new" 16" rims off a late model SLK (okay, okay it required small spacers to pull off - hell, I studied and labored many hours over THIS issue last year when the rims became available for a hundred bucks - remember Winmut? you had input on this), new battery and alternator, new stereo et al., hopefully you guys can understand the desire to give her a new heart. I just need her to be a reliable daily driver and road trip car for a couple years without MAJOR probs.

Probably an expert on these trannies could tear it down and tell if its good or not. Otherwise, for a hobbiest I cannot imagine any way to make any intelligent opinions without a running driving car to feel it with.

I guess you could look in the filter for shavings.
