NY Times article 'beautiful old Mercedes-Benz diesels'

Todays Times has a nice piece on a diesel owner:

What is he talking about, SLOW? Maybe he don't know how to take care of them so they're slow. Not mine

My 300SD is faster off the line with the Alda Maxed out and a straight pipe, than our 300E is! Well....sorta. Maybe for a split second....its just that "shoved" torque feeling. A 1st start in the E is intense. And showing up snooty teens on the highway in their escorts is fun too. Did that a little while ago, dropped it to 3rd and pulled to 110mph, blasted past the guy. His face fell. It was priceless.

Anyways, that was a good article! The "loud and slow" thing though....not true. I can give you a vehicle that IS loud and slow. A F250 PowerSmoke.....oh man. Those are HORRIBLE. I rode with a coworker in his last week. The engine is so raspy and unpleasant sounding, like scraping metal on metal! And is it slow! He hit the throttle and instantly the whole cab is full of NOOOOIISEEE. An hour later and lots of headache medication, you've hit 35mph....and its STILL loud. I'd say under "normal" acceleration, its about 4x as loud as a 617 powered car inside. And its not a pleasant sound, its a horrible raspy banging sound. And this was a 2003! Amazingly, all that noise is created by the engine running along at barely 1500rpm!

Fords! Ick!

C'mon... Your coworker must have a 6.0 if it's raspy sounding. My truck is loud on the outside, granted, but it's a DI engine. On the inside, it's pretty quiet and it pulls much harder at highway speeds than my E300. If his truck is "slow" there must be a problem with it.

I can also switch programs on the chip and it will get even quieter and more powerful. I've driven all over the country in my truck and never thought twice about the noise. The sound actually puts my passengers to sleep on long trips. Heck, my friend's kid got in the truck with me and was out within 5 minutes!

If you want noise and speed try a Cummins, nothing like it.

Thanks for the tip that was a good one.

If they think the 300D is slow they should try a 240D. The SD's certainly isn't slow.

He wasn't mashing the pedal, so maybe its faster.....but it sure felt like the noise to power ratio was a bit extreme. Felt like a school bus accelerating!

I'm not sure if its a 6.0....its an '03....as he says "the last of the good diesels"....so no idea.

Typical quote:"Renowned for their durability, the big Mercedes diesels built from the mid-1970s to the mid-’80s were also notoriously slow and loud."

I am surprised that they did not mention how smoky they are too...

My SDL is pretty quick too. In fact yesterday I blew away an ML. Nothing like Diesel Torque off the starting line

SDL's aren't that fast off the line, a 617 powered SD in good tuning can take an SDL in that situation.

Was the ML driver racing you? I imagine if they had planted the pedal you'd have been toast.
