bizarro heater problem

Hello to the experts out there - this is a head scratcher. Okay here's the background: Bought an 82 300TD from Florida up to NJ. Great car. Love it. Alright so far, you're thinking, right? Well, weather get's cold last week, drive my wife and two kiddies (one an infant) for an hour trip. Cold out. Try heat. No heat. Get to destination. Turn engine off, turn key to third position with engine off, heat! Hot! Hot heat! But start the engine and...no heat. Popped the hood, auxillary pump seams to be working, core is not plugged, monovalve appears to be functioning. I tried again and again with engine on and once the engine is running the heat turns cold almost immediately. I do not know what to do. This is one for car talk.

Anybody have a suggestion? I am supposed to drive the car up to Montreal to see the home opener against the Leafs this Saturday and I would love to take this car instead of my wimpy Volvo. I mean, this car was built to drive to Original 6 hockey games! So, I pose it to you. Can you help me?

I have some heater diagnostic documentation I received from Larry Bible. I am supposed to fax it to someone else. If you provide a fax number I'll include you as well.

I have the same exact problem on my 85 300D (check out replys to my posting "heat will not come on"...and I'll check here also).

I'm thinking there may be something wrong with the auxiliary pump... maybe it is supposed to pump water all the time but for some reason it gets stuck shut when the engine is running...I'll check on that next weekend, and I'll let you know. How did you check to see that the monovalve works fine? (aionascu@yahoo.com)

Is the A/C compressor on? for some reason I think heat and A/C come on at the same. I disconnected the a/c power lead on my SD last winter.

Talking Hail to the Forum!

Hey, thanks to everyone! I rebuilt the monovalve last night and it did the trick. Heat works great. Montreal, here I come!

Hail to the Forum!
