As far as extinguishers, I was looking for a good brand/model/type to buy. The google link just shows pictures. Was that on purpose?

Due to the increased hazards in the garage, install this 3-A:40-B:C rated extinguisher

Halon

Just bought a fully charged Halon extinquisher on EBay for 44.00! Not taking any chances and have put this off long enough. Btw, years ago, I had just rebuilt the engine on a bmw 2002 and had it loaded on a trailer and was towing with an old sixties chev pu with no air cleaner on a hot day. I parked the truck by a wood working shop and when I came back to restart the truck, it backfired and caught fire! Luckily, I ran into the wood shop and was given a nice big Halon unit which put fire out immediately -dry chemical would have gone down the throat of the carb and made vehicle inoperable. Foolishly, (I was 22 at the time) I restarted truck and drove it home! Since that day, I have always been a fan of Halon . . . .

Reminder

That wonky climate control push button unit can be a fire hazard.

for sure. drive an old car? keep an extinguisher inside!

and not one of those crappy dry powder ones either. those make a huge mess, and the powder is corrosive to aluminum and magnesium. get either a CO2 extinguisher, or a Halotron extinguisher. Those two are perfect for electrical and also fuel/oil fires. And they evaporate cleanly, no corrosive powder mess.

To the OP, sorry for the loss, that looked like it was a really nice one. :(

When my father was a teenager with his first car (A 1950's Chevy which he said was crap) he had something similar happen and he was saved when a passing truck driver saw the fire and stopped and got his fire extinguisher out and doused the fire. From that day on my dad carried a fire extinguisher in his car. Same thing happened to one of my sunday school teachers: He had a car that he had acquired a few months before and it was the newest car he had ever owned (it was 10 years old at the time) and just out of nowhere the car started smoking so he pulled over and got out before it erupted into flames. Good thing about us diesel drivers is that our cars are less prone to a lot of things, such as catching fire or hurting our necks/backs from g forces caused by acceleration
