I'm not so sure. The S2000 is a better and much faster car than the MR2, but with a rear engine and the more significant weight difference, I think an MR2 has less in common with the 300D. The only things comparible are the rear-engine Porche and VW's, but because they're also German, they're disqualified .

I never considered the MR2 to be a sportscar. It's really just a street-legal go cart.

Had two Alfa Romeo Guilia Spyders, a '63 and a '64, many years ago. Fun cars that took some work to keep running. I came to Mercedes from Oldsmobile, would not go back.

Nope, my first car was a 300SD. Our 300E is the fastest car I've ever driven...I've taken it a bit over 110 (it did that easy!) Considering thats a ticket to prison as it is I see no reason for an even faster car unless I had the $$ to take it to the track.

Someday I'd like to have an SL or other toy fast car....but thats a long ways off. If I do have a toy/fast car though, its going to be a V12 if I can help it.

Driven plenty of random cars, but the furthest from my 300d have been '76 VW bus, '66 corvair, '59 turbo/efi baja bug, and '05 Subaru STI. But, the most different is my buddy's VW from hell sand rail dragster. It's the equivalant to a 700hp STI with 5x the traction, that and the motors got so much work into it, it doesn't speak German anymore.

Before the diesel, I had a '72 chevy 3/4 ton on 33's, semi-built 350 small block, and 4spd granny gear. I'll be getting '73 with the same goodies soon. I miss my V8 noises and prius crushing abilities.

'65 Austin healy (blew the rear end)
'76 TR7, went through 2 engines in 2 years (poor quality, British Leyand, meets abusive driver, bad combo)
'79 Mustang 5.0, SCCA car for 19 years, 150,000 miles, Sold it with Hi-comp 351, 12.0 1/4 mile, started right up after sitting for almost 2 years.
'86 honda crx, huge POS., good riddance, was worse than the british cars, overall. Where are all the 20 year-old japanese autos? I have not seen one around here, ever. Today at post office there was a Thunderbird "turbo-coupe", I think it was an '84, no rust, and it's 10 degrees outside.
Thats my kind of 'sports car', you can rely on it!

I had a thing for late 70's Japanese cars.

Never did any tuning, though. Just one of those eras where design meets functionality in a very efficient, stylish way.

But once I got into a Benz, it was hard to get back in the 1980 Corolla, even though it was a little speedier and handled better.

I sold my 1999 Blazer 90k miles and my tuned 1998 Acura CL 3.0 with 70k miles to get my 1985 300TD with 368k miles.

After my wife caught the MB diesel obsession, we sold our 2003 Acura TL-S with less than 60K miles to replace it with our 1985 300CD with 208k miles.

I have no regrets and would like to buy more w123 diesels and a few other chassis too. I need to buy a sedan next to round out my 123 collection.

Well I don't know if they are considered sports cars but my first car was a 1969 Roadrunner 383, 4 speed. Which I sold and then bought another 1969 Roadrunner 383, 4 speed. I had a 1984 Corvette and a 1986 Corvette 4+3 transmission.
Right now I have a 2001 Cadillac DTS (for sale), 1991 Mitsubishi 3000 GT, 2008 Titan, 1966 FLH.
Over the years only God knows how many cars I have owned. In my younger years I could tell you the top end of all of them.
The 1984 300 CD will go to 100mph and I'm thinking maybe more but I need to check everything out really well before that happens. And that was on 100% Biodiesel.

So what did you drive before converting to Mercedes, and would you go back?
I would love to have some of my earlier cars...I was lucky enough to never have owned a car I absolutely hated. I had a 1980 Toyota Celica, which would have been a fun car if it weren't for the horrible emissions-choked carburetor. But it was indestructible, and I converted it to a 5-speed and learned a lot in the process. Then I had a 1988 VW Scirocco 16V, which was fairly high-maintenance, but I think a better mechanic would have helped out there...I miss that car a lot.

I had a 1983 RX-7, great little car, I'd love to have another.

I still have my Fiat Spider, fuel-injected, nice torquey engine and much more reliable than everyone seems to think. My wife had a 1990 Mustang 5.0, lots of fun even though it was an automatic and drove like a truck.

And of course we now have the E36 BMW, which I recommend.

They all rusted out, that's where they are! Honda = horrible rear wheel area rust. I'm sure there are more in non=salty areas, though.

I still see the occasional turbo T-bird around. I almost got a T Bird SC once...315 ft-lbs! That was a sweet car. 5 speed, too.

First car was Grandpa's 91 Cougar. Good car, although I don't think I'd go back after my Benz. However, I'd rather have that than something small and fwd...I like cruising the highway, and I like my torque down low.

No sports cars for me, though
