It had torq you wouldn't expect from a small car of that vintage and I recharged the Lever Shocks with 30 weight oil so the car cornered like a skate board...
Even with modifications most of the cars I owned thru' the 80s were boreing econoboxes, coupes and sedans, I really liked my 78 F150 4x4 and 79 Bronco 4x4, go most anyplace, anytime, in almost any weather, working vehicles not todays SUVs ....
93 brought a 88 Olds Toronado Trofeo... Possibly the best car I've ever owned.... It handled like a sports car with luxury appointments and rode like Limo with fuel economy in the low 20s, oh, and lots of gadgets... As a daily driver for 10 years it saw way to many New England Winters, it was awsume in the snow, and at close to 300,000 miles it needed more in rusted parts replacement than it was worth... I still miss that car

Today the 300D is a daily driver and the Bonneville is backup and foul weather ride... The Miata is my weekend toy

Here ya go....looks like a nice example of a Trofeo. Go get you another one and love it!!! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Cars-Trucks___1990-Oldsmobile-Toronado-Trofeo-2-Door-Coupe-FWD-RARE_W0QQitemZ150319950294QQddnZCarsQ20Q26Q20TrucksQQddiZ2282QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_Cars_Trucks?hash= item150319950294&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A727%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Does a '74 F150 with a 460ci engine count as a sports "car"?

I've driven several sports cars and a Porsche gets my blood running. Maybe a Ruf would be the ultimate.

Yeah, the Spitfire was a bit scary now that I think about it, but I thought it was a blast. Someone rear ended it while I was in college. My mom gave it to a neighbor after I left the farm.

My sister had a '72 Roadrunner with a 440 in it when we were in high school. That was also a blast.

I owned a '71 Jaguar XKE for a few days and then the guy backed out of the deal. I offered $4500. He sold it a year later for $2500.

Come to think of it, I forgot I bought a '61 Plymouth Valiant this summer. It needs to get put together yet and has been hauled back up to the farm to wait for reassembly.

I was a Mercedes virgin until I got my Porsche 924. Quite a difference between the two, but surprisingly the Porsche rides almost as well as a W126!

So what did you drive before converting to Mercedes, and would you go back?
Not one chance in hell, would I ever again drive or buy an American car. Last piece of cr@p American car I bought was in 1979. Never again! Life's too short to drive that GM or Ford, Cadillac/Chevy/Lincoln trash heap junk!

last car was a dodge colt that I was going to put an eclipse turbo motor in with a talon TSI AWD... but then I bought the benz... so I havent owned a sports car or exotic until I bought that Irish car... I now understand the British car joke. Thank god they do use lucas wiring harnesses because finding NOS wiring harness smoke for a DMC-12 would be harder than getting a blinder fluid cap for a spitfire.

1976 Opel Manta. I learned about Bosch L-Jetronic with that car. A few Porsche 914's and a couple of Fiat 124 Spiders.

My first car was a 1963 Ford Falcon with a 260 V-8. Very quick, but the drum brakes took forever to bring it to a stop.

For many years I had a 1967 Olds 98. 9 mpg in the city and 12 on the highway!

In the 90s I had a 1970 Olds 98, with the Rocket 455 for about three days until it caught fire and burned up. I had just put 30 gallons of gas in it too. The torque was incredible.

Thanks... Mine was the earlier version 1985 - 89, same drive train but shorter, the new body style began in 1990 and was discontinued in 92 I think...
I think they marketed the car to the wrong demographic, it was no longer the really big V-8 Coupe for retired Executives...

All this talk about sports cars makes me want one. I had a girlfriend who had a 1974 MBG I used to love driving it. I also had a neighbor who had a 1953 MG TF. That car was only 'driven' in the driveway as it always had "issues". I would love a TR6 but I think I could only afford a Spitfire or a Midget.

Why are you saying that a Spit is scary? Is it the slowness or the handling? Is it worse than a 'B'?

Hard to say if a Spit is scarier than a "B". I was 18 when I had the "B". I recall basically feeling like I was sitting on the road. One's legs are out of sight almost flat in the "tunnel".

The Spit is kind of like driving a grocery shopping cart. At speed it bounces around. Mine has Laycock overdrive ( and its a MkIII with the probably best performing 1300 pre-smog engine) so it scoots. Looking to the rear, there is only about two feet from your head to the rear bumper. You are almost invisible to anyone in a full size SUV. Last time I had a tailgater who thought going 5 above the speed limit wasn't good enough for him.

Not to start a Italian versus English car flame war here, but I find it odd that Fiats aren't more popular, with all their virtues over English engineering.
