Apparent Oil leak at center glow plug 300SD
Just "inherited" a OK shape '81 - 300SD. Runs pretty good, not great. Went in today to get it registered and it did not pass emissions. Guy there said that the 3rd cylinder has a oil leak? Is this serious? He made it sound like it was really dangerous. Or is it simply that this particular glow plug seal is bad. I am not the diesel master, ..but....aren't diesels supposed to have oil in the cylinders? Mixes with fuel? Any help will be appreciated. Hate to spend any real money on it. I'm pretty handy and can typically tackle any fix it project. Gets great gas (diesel) mileage, and seems to run good. Makes a great extra car for a family of 3 drivers (and up till now only 2 cars)
Thanks Larry |

Ahhh,..under closer inspection..
Looks more like bad fuel line(or dried up leaking fuel line), NOT oil. Whew... What size is this fule line? Looks like 5/16 inch rubber with cloth outer braid? Can I get this at somewhere other than a MB dealer?? I live in Phoenix.

Lafman,
This is called fuel injector bypass hose and comes in 1 meter legths. $15 per meter at MB dealer, much less at Fastlane or Performance Products. One meter should be enough to do the entire set of 5 cylinders. Don't forger to order the "blind plug" for the fifth cylinder up against the fire wall. Also, be careful how you install. I used a pir of pliers and ended up cracking one of the new lines. Just be persistent and push! Hope this helps,

Diameter of Fuel Bypass line?
I went to BAP today (a local import parts store) they had 3 mm. and 5 mm. Got a couple feet of both. Seems that the 3mm is close, but not quite. Have not tried it yet. For now I just need to replace about 6 inches from cylinder 2 to 3 to get this car OK'd for driving here in AZ. For now that's what I need to do. Will either of these (3 or 5 mm) work? Or do I need to go to MB? Thanks for helping. Appreciate it. This is the rubber hose with the cloth braiding, correct?.... casue that is the one that is leaking (on cylinder 3 glow plug)

Thanks
With ya all the way. State inspects the vehicles. Not so lucky as your mom. Will find teh correct hose. Shouldn't be that difficult.
How much of a pain is it to change? Need any special tools? WD40, or Windex, or????? Larry |

Are they now doing emmissions testing on diesels in AZ, or did it fail the State safety inspection due to the fuel leak?

Failed State Safety Inspection
Failed the safety inspections, not emissions. Sorry
