Think this will work - oil pan gasket

Greetings,

I would need to drive about 82 miles to Nashville to get my oil pan gasket replaced. So, I've been thinking about how to do it myself. I know that the motor mounts must be released, and raise up the motor to get the oil pan off. What if I slice the gasket, lower the oil pan without releasing the motor mounts, and fit the gasket so that the seam will meet real close, add a little bit more gasket cement where the seams meet, and put it back on. I guess this could work depending on how much clearance I would get between the pan & motor without releasing the motor mounts. Will this work? Thanks.

that might work on a chevy or a ford but the benz has a very thin gasket and the glue sometimes is a PITA to get off as well as the gasket itself being rock hard and just stuck - short cuts are learned over years of doing it the wrong way - we pull the motor yea i know but i can almost bet ours would be done sooner and it wont leak after all the tweaking -- thats not to say mine is the only way but its the way we do it now - jz

do you have to lift the motor to change the pan on the 2.2 engine? i could swear its not the case.

do it the right way the first time so you dont have to go back and do it again.

You won't be able to properly clean the old gasket off block and pan gasket surfaces. Some of what you do clean off will fall into the pan.

Where are you?

You don't have your location listed in your user info. If you are 82 miles east of Nashville, maybe we can have an oil pan party. I have to replace the pan (BIG hole) on my '91 350SDL, and I have a engine lift. If interested, PM me and we'll work out a date, but I have to warn you, my driveway is my shop, so warm dry days dictate my schedule.

No matter what, I would spend the time or money to get the job done right.

A couple gallons of Walmart no-name oil ought to get you there, how fast is it leaking?
