They did, I don't know any details though.

You can always get an after market tank that goes in the spare tire compartment, and hook up a valve to select between the two.

The W124 chassis was made to accept two forms of fuel and space was allowed for two filler pipes by making the fuel door area longer. However, I believe it was designed for a "gas-gaso" engine, i.e., one that would run on either propane or gasoline. It would be interesting to see if an optional second diesel tank was made available.

I have seen W123 cars with aftermarket tanks, usually Fiberglas®.

I've seen pictures of 123 or 126 (I forget which it was) with an aluminum tank across the front end of the trunk, but I think it required filling inside the trunk.

I've been kicking around trying to fit the fuel tank from my parts car into my driver, but I suspect that my tank range would then be the deciding factor, rather than the car's!

A stock 300SD can drive for about 6.5-7 hours at 70ish mph on one fill.....thats a long time without stopping. I've done it, but don't drink too much before you leave!

a guy I work with knows a lady who has a 300SD TD factory delivery with double fuel tanks! I said WOW! how can I see it? If I do I will post pictures.
My guess that would make it a pretty rare car.

does anyone know of any other "rare" options on diesels?

enrique

There were several company`s that made some after market tanks that fit
in the trunk up against the stock fuel tank. this was in the 80`s I think.

I ran across a lady in a parking lot a few years ago hat had one in an old W115 220D. she said with both filled it held 45 gallons.

So I started looking around and found one that was in a 300CD in a wrecking yard. it was already removed so i didn`t have to go through the hassle of removing it.

It is aluminium, holds 12 gallons and the fill is in the trunk. I only use it if Iam going on a trip. I hate having to stop for fuel all the time. with both tanks I hold 34 gallons.

I filled up in Lathrop, Ca. and drove to salt Lake city, ut. and then on up to ogden, Ut before filling up. think my mpg was 28.

All the tanks I have seen are either aluminium or steel. and more aluninium. I have not seen any fiberglass ones.

There is one in the Moss landing PNP as of 2 wks ago. but for what ever reason PNP pokes holes in all the tanks .

Iam not sure I would want to sacrafice my spare tire for a tank. But the extra tank does take up some room.
