HELP! Starter issues: 1986 SDL
I went to start the Diesel this morning and I had the following problems
first the starter would not engage the ring gear. It just spun at high speed. I let it run for about five seconds and it finally engaged. Then once the car started, the starter would not stop running! I turned off the key and the starter disengaged (whew!) but kept running. I had to disconnect the battery to turn it off. Once it was off, if I reconnected the battery the starter would run, but not engage. My question is are there solenoids available for this starter or do I have to replace the whole thing? The starter motor runs fine. Also has anybody heard of the solenoid sticking in the run position? It seems to me that once you turn the key away from the 'start' position the relay should no longer be energized and the motor should stop. What could keep it running? Does anybody have a spare 300SDL starter they could sell me? I have a spare OM617 starter, but it is different than the one on the OM603

I don't have one off a 300SDL; however, would other w126 model starters work?

I had the same issue on a OM617 300D, the starter would continue to run after you let go of the key, to the point of killing the battery. (When it wouldn't start).

The fastlane part number for the SDL is W0133-1600766. What model/year is your W126 starter and I will see it it is the same part No. Thanks, Joe

Because of the ice on the driveway I decided to try the FixItAgainTony or FIAT method on my starter. I took a wooden shovel handle and a hammer and gave the solenoid a few whacks. I reconnected the battery and lo and behold the starter behaved properly. Hopefully it will last a few days until I can get a new one and the driveway and lawn melt.
Wish me luck

replace it with a new or good reman unit, its 2 much a pain in the arse to replace with questionable unit. mine went up few months ago, was a royal pain to replace. hopefully its easier on SDL though.
btw, I got my reman bosch from worldpac for $160 ish. Its smaller than the benz starter was, which made it easier to get in but leaves me a little worried..maybe electronics have improved since mid 80s. Always but always TEST THE NEW STARTER BEFORE PUTTING IT IN. Put your foot on it and hot shot the +12 lead on it to make sure it actually works. Ive read too many stories of ppl getting supposedly new one in and its kaput. Would really suck...

SDL starter is really easy to change. Take off the pans, undo the leads either from the top or bottom. Then jack up the front driver's side, and undo the two bolts. It takes a bit of maneuvering to get it out, but it's ok. Should take 30 minutes to do.
