CV Joints Questions
I was told that the CV joints needed to be replace on my 81 240D. 1. On fast line there are two kits that you can buy (1)Outer (2)Inner. What is the difference? What one should I get. Here is the link: http://catalog.peachparts.com/ShopByVehicle.epc?q=&yearid=1981%40%401981&makeid=63%40%40MERCEDES-BENZ%40%4063&modelid=6141%40%40240D&keyword=cv&subcatid=P:241427@@CV+Boot+Kit&mode=PA 2. How many CV joints are there? Should replace all them? Sorry for allot of dumb questions. Thanks

It would be easier to replace the entire half shaft, that also includes the inner and out joints.

If you get New or rebuilt Axles/Half Shafts you will have less work and also get a warranty.
How about some more details on why you need new CV joints. Also the kits you are speaking of are they the CV Joint Boot Kits or the actual CV Joint. If your Axle is making noise replacing the Boots will not help. You have 2 CV Joints per Axle = toal of 4 CV. There is also 2 styles of Axles. |

It depends on what you want to spend. AutoZone or O-Reilly is $100 or so each. CVJ in Denver makes the best ones, but can be $300 or so.
Winmutt goes to the yards and buys good used ones for $35 or so each. |
I had that same issue- the clicking in reverse. my boots were not torn, although they are weathered..
I went and grabbed the turkey injector out of the deep frying kit, and packed it full of M-1 grease. gave each boot a syringe of fresh grease, no clicking 30K later. worked for me, YMMV. |

At that time the New Made in China Axles were not as available as they are now. There is at least 2 very extensive Threads on Axles so I will not go into details. In general: If you buy what is available someplace local like ORileys or NAPA and you have a problem there is someone to speak with face to face and there is a chance the problem can be fixed faster. If you buy New or rebuilt on the internet you need to consider the shipping and you may have to pay to ship the core back or they keep the Core Charge. If you have a problem it will be slower to resolve and due to the size and weight of Axles you could take a loss on the shipping charges even if you get a refund or another set of Axles. |
