I suggest you just don't read my posts. You really won't be missing that much, to be honest.
You need to get you another Mercedes. It might help with the attitude.
I'll be watching for how you reference it, though.....

Again, to the original poster, I'm sorry for the degradation of your thread. The real important item to note was your new MB!!!

That's very true and what makes this such a great place is the people. Some people just come for information, others come to contribute but the joking and different personalities are what makes this place fun and interesting. It's all part of making EVERYONE feel welcome regardless of what car they own whether it's 40 years old, in perfect condition, a rust bucket or brand new, Benz or non-Benz.

When someone comes on a posts about a new car they've brought home, that's the time to celebrate with them and encourage them by giving them both technical and emotional support. Think about it - this is a car that's been saved from an untimely demise! It's in the hands of someone who will care for it and keep it going for many years to come.

God knows these cars can try the patience sometimes and the folks here are certainly a good bunch when it comes to being not only an unequaled knowledge base but also doling out that knowlege with a bit of fun added in.

The TDT thing is Jimmy's schtick. Everyone knows it and besides, the other guys gave him such a softball pitch he had to take it!

I'm reminded of a line from the movie "Stripes" when the sarge said to Psycho: "Lighten up Francis..."

Brake bleeding

Can I bleed the brakes without removing the wheels or do they need to be removed? I have a VERY soft pedal and I can't see anywhere that brake fluid is dripping near the wheels, so I am assuming that they just need to be bled real bad.

You can reach the bleeders with the wheels on. Make sure you don't push the pedal too far or you'll damage the master cylinder.

You should probably flush the whole brake system with new fluid as soon as possible too. It's been neglected by the looks of that master cylinder reservoir. Now is as good a time as any since you are bleeding them out anyway. Be very careful loosening the bleeder screws as they break off easily if they are set-up.
Also, the gap between the air cleaner and U-tube may be caused by broken air cleaner rubber mounts. There are 3 of them attaching the air cleaner to a mounting bracket above the intake/exhaust manifolds.

I will be VERY careful with the bleeders, as always. I'm debating on whether or not to get a power bleeder.
I may not be able to get to do this until the weekend because of the "Deep Freeze" that is forecast for the few days. I'd like to get this accomplished so I can take her for a spin in the neighborhood to see how she drives, but I will do as nature dictates. I have been starting her every day, and she starts up good after 4 glow cycles (they seem to last about 10 seconds), fires right up.

I found that the air cleaner wasn't properly installed as you indicated. The rubber connectors seem worn out, so I ordered 1 each today. I also ordered a new fuel cap as it was missing.

loving my car!

I use a European power bleeder from Motive Products. It's great.

You don't need to reset the glow cycle when the light goes out. Wait until you hear the glow plug relay click off (it's on the inner driver side fender). That happens around 30-35 seconds.

Then reset the cycle and start when the light goes out.

The light goes out indicating a "ready to start" condition, but the glow plugs glow up to 35 seconds or once you release the key from the start position.

From what you said, you'd be fine with one "full" glow cycle.

I also purchased the prechamber threaded ring removal tool today as I need it for my wife's car, the '74 240D. Have to pull all of the prechambers on it, clean them, then reinstall with new seal rings and O-rings. A bonus is that it is the same tool for the 300CD Turbo!
I spoke with the local MB dealer and I was told that the seal rings come in different sizes for the 240D. (2mm, 2.3mm, 2.6mm, & 2.9mm) I wasn't sure wheather this was a diameter measurement, and asked. The parts person couldn't tell me what the different sizes were. I came home and searched the forum and the net and finaly determined that they are different thicknesses of the sealing ring. I figure getting some 2mm & 2.3mm ones will cover me.

found in the glove box...got me thinking

I found what looks like a smallish arm with cruise control wording on the knob. I got to thinking and think I found the cruise control, at least I think it is. Its a unit that's connected to the throttle in the engine compartment.
BACK TO THE ARM, I looked all around the steering column for the place that it might have been broken off of, but I don't see anywhere that it might go. Can anyone point out to me where it is supposed to be? See picture 1
With it being so cold lately, I haven't had a chance to bleed the brakes yet. I did dig up my hand operated vacuum pump that I had from a previos life, see picture 2. I took it apart and soaked the cup seal to get it to work, it now pumps vacuum great. Now all I have to do is figure out a way to make a vacuum cup and it will be very useful when I DO get to the brake bleeding. I'm hoping to get a chance on Saturday, the temp is supposed to climb back up into the mid to upper 20's.

^^ That is part of the combination switch. You'll probably have to take the whole thing out, not difficult, to see if you can reinstall it. It's on the steering column with the turn signal.

HOWEVER, your cruise control, more than likely, doesn't work. To fix it would be to repair/replace the amp, if you have that system. If you have the servo system, that probably doesn't work either, and I don't know the fix.

Thanks for the help toomany MBZ.
I did see where that lever is supposed to by the turn signal lever. The end of the cruise control lever looks like it was snapped off. I can see what looks like half of a hole at the end that connects to the switch. Most likely will need a new switch assembly when I get to that point.

I looked in the engine compartment and the tach amp (on driver side fender, correct) is still there (tach does not work of course) as is the pick up at the dampner. There is a black box with many wires eminating from it, just forward of the tach amp. The tach amp looks to be connected to this box and to the cruise control actuator as well. Am I seeing this correctly?
The pick up, the front and sides of the engine are gobbed with black tar. I think she will need a valve cover gasket as well as will need to adjust the valve clearance after I get the brakes functiong properly.

I will be doing the brake bleed Friday afternoon when I get home. I plan to use my salamander heater to keep me some what warm so I can tell if I need to get a master cylinder ordered. This way if it needs to be replaced, I can get it ordered so I may be able to get the brakes working by monday afternoon.

On another note, with the engine cold, where should the approx level of the trans fluid be on the dip stick. I know I need to check it after it's been warmed up to get the truest reading, but I just want to be sure it has enough in it to drive it round the block with out damaging the trans. Right now, with the engine cold, the level is just above the end of the dip stick.

I found the block heater power cord but the plug end has been ripped off. The PO probably forgot to unplug it before driving off and ripped it off. I will be replacing the plug end and will plug her in to warm her up before I try to start her again.
