I should message him, asking if I could bring my .22 to test the windows.

$7,000.00 is a fair price with the expectation to replace the engine.
You can't expect to look that good in a Mercedes for less than $10,000.00. A used pick up truck costs over $10,000.00 although with a pick up truck; you can haul things and maybe recoup some of your money. The biggest risk is investing a whole lot of money to get the car fixed right and the insurance company total it out after a fender bender for less money than your investment. But if you can avoid a collision and afford to drive the car ($12,000-$15,000.00), then you will have you a nice, fun car to drive and own. Even if it costs a little more than the $15,000.00 and it doesn't use oil.

The USDA is publishing car price guides now? I don't know how they have time for that, what with testing beef for E.coli and all their other duties.

Unless you can get that car for $2k or less it isn't worth it. You can get a gas S320 with 200k less miles thats 5-7 years newer for under $10k.
So $2k+rebuilt engine would be at least $8k, and you would still have a 250k car that I'm sure needs front end work. Throw a gear box in and your up to $10k. Its almost a parts car.

$2,500.00 for the evaporator and you still are less than $15,000.00.

I rather just go down to the used car lot down the street and buy the mint 1995 S500 with 50k miles on it. Its in better shape than this thing by leaps and bounds and I bet you could get it for $10k.
That way insted of replacing an engine you could simply just have a nice car to drive.

Id rather spend the extra 1-2k, and get a 95-96 S600. Torque, and smooth power.

$10K?? I've looked at three S500s in the past month for under $2500, all complete drivers with less miles than that car. I've also watched a couple go through the auctions un-sold. They're not worth anything with over 150k miles.
Anyone who'll buy that ebay car is planning on a new engine, and anyone who's planning on a new engine either has to pay to have it done, or buy the car cheap enough to make some "sweat equity" and do it himself. $2k is my value on that car. I'd like to have it, but it's a money-pit if you don't have the parts and expertise to repair it, ... or a parts car. Quote:

I'm sure you could get an S500 for $2,500, but it would be beat to death with starship mileage. For a good car your actualy going to have to pay a bit.
Did any of your S500's have: 50k one owner miles? Perfect interior, where everything works, and it looks like new? Perfect exterior with no dents and only a couple of small chips? In my area the only W140's I see in the sub $5k range are beat to death. My friend paid almost $30k for his 1995 S600 a few years ago, but it still looks, feels, drives, and smells like new. Its also been 100% reliable. The Lexus dealer that it was traded in at by the original owner, put it in the front row next to the new LS430's. At the time it was 7 years old, not bad for an old car by dealer standards.
