OH, yeah, you should see how much fuel I had left in the "jug" when I got home...........NOT much. This morning, I said I had some pics to post. Here you go:

Okay --- someone good in Math do the Math.

That's 4.189 gallons
+ 16.849 gallons
21.038 gallons

Am I mistaken, but I thought a 300SDL tank was bigger.

Oh, here's how much fuel I had left when I got back from the filling station after the FIRST trip.

Coda and a few other cars visiting The Parthenon.....

Well, it is part of the "Journey".............

;)

daw_two 03-22-2009 11:20 PM

any guesses?

Would anyone venture a guess as to how much fuel Coda leaked while I was out of town? Here's the area that was under the hood. Awful, huh? The good news is I got my truck fixed today, so Coda is now officially in drydock.

Officically "started"

Okay, tonight marks the "official start" of the remaking of Coda. The pics are proof that I actually got started. But first, staging of the area had to be performed.

Different focal lengths are necessary to have near by.

Things that are in my way:
TheDon's box of goodies.

HitMan X's box of goodies and the box to ship them.

Some of the Issues follow:
Is that diesel on top of the driver's side motor mount?
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4166.jpg

Is that fan blade worn on the end? Is that a "button" in the radiator?
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4177.jpg
Different angle of the worn fan blade.
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4178.jpg

What I did tonight:
The staging.
Taking these pics.
and removing this:
Squabble's Wind Reflector
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4185.jpg

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4186.jpg
Try taking this pic --- upside down leaning over into the sunroof. Hole where screw came out; the screw is reused to hold the angle bracket for the wind reflector.

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4189.jpg

Coda without wind reflector
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4190.jpg

Viola. No wind reflector.
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4192.jpg

Best paint on Coda's roof.
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...d/DSCF4193.jpg

Paint even still shines.

Alternatively, get a backup like a Dodge Caravan so you're incented to keep your Mercedes Diesel reliable.

pontiac aztek ? :D (probably cheap, too)

When I ran mine out, it was absolutely bone dry so it had air everywhere it could get air. When the folks got there an hour and a half later with about ten gallons of diesel in various containers in the back of the truck, after we refilled mine started the first try. Floored it, held the starter for what my grandfather measured at somewhere between 50 and 60 seconds; the "almost-got-it" sounds started at 45 seconds or so and it was running shortly before 60. The only time I ever ran it out, that was the restart procedure. Never touched a filter or an injector line.

Some progress and some questions.....

Okay, here's what I did tonight:

Removed the passenger side headlight.
Discovered a "mystery" plug behind the light --- two conductor female plug; had black electrical tape over it; any ideas?
Removed the crossover tube.
Removed the injector lines.
Removed the intake manifold --- don't forget the accelerator linkage; 2 bolts on the underside of the intake manifold.
And what is that brass bracket on the back of the intake manifold? Located near the firewall.
Discovered I had an effective EGR soot blockage.
And why are those electrical cables routed between cylinder #3 and #4 of the intake mainifold? Why not route them on the outside of the intake manifold? Weird.

Pics follow.

Anyone have any ideas on the plug? Weird, huh?

What's a screw doing in there?

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/DSCF4509.jpg
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/DSCF4511.jpg

And what is this bracket used for? It was on the the very last cylinder intake manifold.
http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/r...0/DSCF4515.jpg

7 easy steps thus far in my work; piece of cake, right?

Does the mystery plug connect to the headlight wiper motor?

The metal loop at the #6 end of the intake manifold is the for lifting the engine. There's a loop cast into the front end of the head as the forward lifting point.

Nope --- the wiper is a separate plug.

That's what I was thinking too. At least it's the same type of connector as the one on my 123s.

Looks like it's coming along nicely daw.

Oil Leak? Coolent Leak? Transmission cooler lines?

Okay, folks. I need some help. I'm about ready to start cleaning and here's the situation. I have what appears to be oil pooled in the 2nd (from the front) head bolt. It's generally made a mess from about cylinder #1 to almost #3. See pics.

It does not smell like diesel. It looks like oil. Coda is blowing or burning about 3/4 of a quart of oil every 3500 miles. Any thoughts?

Also, what's the easiest, best way of cleaning this? I'm guessing I need to stuff rags into the manifold holes. I went to the hardward store and bought some little plastic caps to put on the delivery valves and injectors. Cover those babies up. See pics.

Oh, no. I'm was out taking some more pics and looked what I found underneath the car --- last 2 pics. Now where is that coolent coming from? And .... transmission cooler lines; is that transmission fluid on the hose with the spring wrapped around it???

No. The aux water pump is up by the monovalve on a W126.

Yes that is coolant. Where under the motor are you looking? Yes that is transmission fluid on the tranny cooler hoses. They are very inexpensive to replace.
