It sounds like the shield that's right below the air cleaner on a W-123.
In my picture, the air filter goes to the right of the red arrow, over the air intake pipe (black tube with hole). The aluminum piece that the arrow points to is not specifically designed as a heat shield but does block some engine heat, especially radiant heat from the exhaust manifold, trap cat, its later replacement, the turbo, and the down pipe. The air filter case in a W124 is plastic as is the coolant expansion tank. (Both have been removed as part of the work that was going on when I took that picture last year.)

ya, it just causes problems for reassembling, and its been removed and put back so many times that its just a mess, and its going to take me at least half an hour to do, and then when the car breaks again, its coming back out, so if i can skip this step then i want to

OK, if you don't put the shield back then you ought at least to put something in to protect the plastic air filter box and coolant tank from the heat radiated from the engine. Perhaps some stick-on foam with aluminum on one side like they sell in hardware stores for insulating pipes and stuff?

See where the exhaust manifold is? The heat shield is there to protect the plastic parts from that heat source.

It needs to be there.
