Mid-engine convertible Diesel Sports car

http://jalopnik.com/5128770/volkswagen-bluesport-concept-42-mpg-roadster-officially-revealed

The VW Bluesport Roadster may only be a concept, but it's sure to pique the interest of drivers looking for top-down fun and diesel power on the same chassis.

As we mentioned last night, the Volkswagen Bluesport concept is powered by a 180 HP turbodiesel motor mounted amidship. Despite its concept status, VW is promising fairly realistic performance. This includes a 0-60 MPH time of 6.2 seconds and a top speed of 140 MPH. Though not Prius-killing, the 42 MPG combined mileage (we're guessing in the European cycle) is impressive for a sports car and would surely top any known competitors.

I wonder how well the airflow is channeled to keep the exhaust away from the passengers.

Other than that it's a very attractively designed car. I don't see why US auto manufactuers can't design and BUILD things like that.

In new diesels with particulate filters you can't tell if it's a petrol or a diesel. They even have vapor coming out of the tailpipe/s in cold days like petrols' cars do.

BD does make it smell nice and "sweet".

I am pretty sure the block is too big although perhaps certain engines will fit. A D-max? (cough....izusu)

Like said before, there is no smell. If I couldn't smell my 3.0 liter Sprinter even at the tailpipe, I am sure it will be no different in this toy.
One of few or only positive aspect of DPF.

Gainesville FL craigslist has a guy selling an early 90's Miata project car with a 300td engine As a rabid Miata and diesel Mercedes owner I almost pulled the trigger on this project myself.

Not quite mid engined as the mentioned car but just as unique.

I'd drive that VW in a heartbeat

Put something besides a DPF choked 2.0L 4-banger in there and I'd take it.

6.2 seconds is too slow for a "sport" car.

6.2 seconds to 60 is not sporty enough? I highly doubt VW designed it for drag races. They designed it to accomodate performance, style and economy.

And what WOULD be sporty?

I'm sure the aftermarket tuners are rubbing their hands together in gleeful anticipation of chips n' tweaks that will get that 0-60mph figure down to 5 secs or less.
