w124 turbo charger drinking oil, whistling

My 1987 300TD has been making odd whistling noises for a month or so. When it ran low on oil this past week I decided something was probably wrong with the turbo. Turbos are beyond my DIY capabilities, so I took it to an indy mechanic.

He says that the turbo is "drinking oil" and is making the whistling noises. He says it needs a rebuild, but that that year and model of car had a lifetime warranty on it and I should go to the dealer and get it taken care of.

Anyone every heard of such a thing? I couldn't find anything on Google (or here) and I'd love to have documentation I could take with me to the dealer . . .

Thanks for any help

Tim

there is a lifetime recall on the trap ox in the 85+ cars
they will replace your trap ox and your turbo if the trap ox caused it to fail

The trap oxidizer looks like a big metal can, on the passenger side of your engine. If it has been replaced, there will be a tube that looks like it is wrapped in foil.
I am pretty sure most cars by now have that recall work done, althogh the 87 I bought this summer still had one

The trap ox recall has been done for sure. Last time I went to the dealer (years ago) they specifically pointed that out.

I think my mechanic is thinking of a warranty on the turbo from the turbo manufacturer. Garrett does offer a life time warranty on some of their turbos, it seems. At least that's what the Internet told me, so it must be true I just can't find any specifics for my model and year.

I have no idea what caused this problem with my turbo. It started suddenly one cold morning when the car wouldn't shift from 2 to 3 and the RPMs went quite high before I let off the gas. The turbo suddenly sounded like a dentist drill on high.

The internet lied to you. *shock* *awe*

If you want Garrett to offer a rebuilt turbo to you, expect to pay around $800 + $200 core charge. The best bet is to spend $100 on a good used one.

Yeah, that seems like what I should do. Is there any to be said for getting a newer/better turbo? Assuming something that can bolt up without modification. I'm not going to be doing modifications.

Thanks
Tim

The turbo used on the 3.5L engine is the same except for a larger compressor wheel.

I found these folks in a search, here on the forum: http://www.gpopshop.com/index.html

It sounds like they have a pretty extensive operation including kits and rebuild services.

A larger compressor, no ARV, and slightly shorter along its axis.

^^ yes.

At idle it bleeds off a little pressurized air from the outlet side of the compressor and dumps it into the inlet side of the compressor.

Opinions vary on what it does, it's my opinion that it was an early attempt to keep turbo RPM up at idle and reduce turbo-lag. Others feel it has to do with emissions & the trap-oxidizer.

Because thats what its for. It does not improve performance, it can only reduce it.
