I've looked at several native MI '87 300Ds over the past couple of years, rust is still on less than 50% of those.
123s didn't fare as well. Michigan is bad, depending on where and how you drive, my '85 quattro still doesn't show a spot of rust either (daughter's boyfriend sold it to another family friend). Now if you drive on the Chicago-area freeways, or Detroit, or other well-salted freeways you're seeing lots of aerosolized salt-water, gets everywhere. How you care for the car also changes things. My parents' cars are all Michigan cars also, but they live in FL in the winter, ... and when they're here for Christmas, they don't drive if the weather is bad. What are the odds that many 126s up here were owned by retired folks who could afford to winter in the south? Not all Michigan cars are bad, just as not all Florida cars are rust-free.
