'06 CDI broken front spring!?

Okay, it seems my dad's luck/karma/whatever is in the dumper lately. He recently had the water pump lock up and him, which he got fixed, under warrantee I believe. And now, spontanious coil spring failure.

Here's the scene: He's at his local barber's getting his hair cut. A lady walks in and asks if the silver Mercedes in the parking lot is his, because it just made an alarming bang and kinda moved. He went and looked and the front left side was sitting a little low, but maybe not quite on the bump stops. After putting it up on a lift, he discovered the coil had snapped clean about two coils from the bottom. He theorizes it's from hitting a large pothole a while ago that bent a rim. He got it fixed and says it drives great. I doubt it's possible to break a spring by hitting a pothole, besides, this was a month or more later and it was just sitting there when it broke.

Anyone heard of this happening? I know their quality has slipped, but come on. This has to be just another random anomalous failure, right? Some manufacturing flaw in the steel or something.

I think it may have just been a fluke. If its happened to many people before, we'd hear of a recall. The combination of really technical engineering and cutting corners to save money just doesn't work, which is why 123's and 126's never snap springs

That's the first time I've heard of this. Probably a rare quality issue combined with hitting the pothole.

Here's a couple over in England with the same failure on the W211, so I would suspect it is not all that rare.

Not unheard of, it does happen. W124's and other models have done this; usually at the 1st or 2nd coil.

I'd ask MB to good will it if out of warranty.

Not that rare, early W140's were known to do that.

On an 06 its probably covered under warranty still?

I saw a W211 with it's front spring broken just sitting at a gas station a while back. Looked like a very nice car...and one side of the front end was basically sitting on the ground... I know this happens on W140's as well...I don't think the issue is all that uncommon!

Good thing it was just parked when it broke. Guess I'll stick to vintage cars.

Hitting something that will bend a rim is pretty close to the same thing as an accident/crash and seldom is accident damage covered by warranty. Worth a try, of course.

Wow, thanks for the replies! Very unexpected. I've always held the German's metallurgical skills in the highest regard, so this is a total surprise. Weird.

Yeah, he got it covered by insurance since there was damage at least to the wheel and spring, that'd apparently been caused by a road hazard.

When the spring fails, does the affected wheel lock up in the wheel well, preventing spinning and/or turning side to side? If it does, this would be a major safety issue. If it doesn't, it's merely an inconvenience that costs some money to repair.

Yeah right, my car has proven they don't by surviving Michigan roads for close to 6 years with no replaced and no broken suspension parts as of yet.
