om616 to om615 swap
I just picked up a cherry '76 240d with a bad motor (I assume it is a 616). I have never seen a nicer orig. interior on this old of a car. It looks as it came off the lot, and no body rust per say, so I want to make her a driver. I have 2 rebuilt om615 motors with injector pumps and manifolds and oil filter housings installed sitting on my garage floor. What am i getting in to here guys? It's a manual tranny, and this will be my first w115 heart transplant.
1. Can it easily be done 2. What are the differences in motors? 3. do i pull the tranny with the motor? I've looked a bit through the forums and am still needing some direction and moral support. I'll post pics as soon at I get her home. Thanks Guys. |

They are basically the same except for cylinder bore and stroke.

What about flywheel balance? The om616 that is shot is a manual, and the rebuilt om615 motor has an auto tranny. These are older motors, were the fly wheels neutrally balanced? Will the 616 flywheel mate to the 615? Also I have another good 615 motor for sale with pump, intake and filter housing but no flywheel.
I appreciate all the help you guys provide. |

Cool swap, do it!
Only things that comes to my mind is that the injection pump probable is the older style with a Gorilla knob start/shutdown/idle rpm-control. Could you post pics of the 615's here, both drivers and passenger side?

I'll post pics of the motors tomorrow. I assumed that the '76 240d that the om615 is going in to has the same "gorilla" starter knob. I need to get the '76 trailered to the shop, Most likely it will be next week, as it is getting friggin cold here in Iowa.
Also where do i find the serial numbers on these 615s? |

Pics of the motors available for the swap. The one with the painted block is a rebuilt motor, It has been sitting for at least 5 years though. Pretty sure the auto tranny mated to it and the motor with the unpainted block are good. Also for sale!
