6v to headlights

I searched.

am I right in believing that the switch inside the car is pretty much the only thing between battery, fuse box and headlights?

I traced the wires from the headlights to the firewall and then lost them. I obviously need to clean a few connections or redo some wiring, it's waaay to dim to even consider driving down mainstreet to the grocery store at night.

I checked the positive relay thing on the strut tower and that had 12.5v with the car running so I know im not losing voltage from battery to distribution block

You are correct. Sounds like a corroded or damaged connection, a partially-broken wire, or a dirty or burned switch contact.

Do the running/tail lights work properly (as bright as they should be) in switch position #1? How about in #2, when the headlights are also on? With engine off, the tail lights may dim a little when the headlights are turned on, due to the additional load; if they dim significantly then the problem may be in the wiring before the switch – I would need to pray over the schematic a little before jumping to conclusions.

Ran outside and checked tail lights, they are bright in both positions. Tomorrow when the windchill isn't below 0 I will check the voltage that they have and pull the switch and hopefully I can fix the headlights easily.

check for corrison and for shorts. Voltage is being dropped somewhere. Also check your grounds and corrioson @ the headlights ground.
