Wow.....someday I hope to be able to take a motor apart like that! I have a 617 (one that was spewing oil when running) to play with and take apart....maybe I'll have some fun with it this summer and see what went wrong inside....

Good luck getting it all back together! Maybe I'll get to see this beauty of an SDL someday.

Is anyone else concerned about Metrics Motors quality after this story?

They are shipping the replacements here with a prepaid return label. I didn't address the machining. I was thinking about waiting until I got them to see how they fit.

I got the replacement rods from Metric. They were correct this time. 4mm longer for the 3.0 liter. Here are the two side by side.

I received a replacement set of rings from Mahle. I contacted Mahle here in the states and they set a note off to German asking they send me a set. I got the rings this week and put the oil ring on the piston. Now with the correct rod set and all my pistons I could continue.

The connecting rods on the crank seemed too loose, so I measured the crank surface and found them to be at first oversize. The same with the main bearings. I had the crank repaired at the machine shop, but they had said nothing about it being reground and polished for oversized bearing, nor was it tagged so. This means I need to order another $240 in bearing and I can't use or return the ones I've already tried.

New bearings came in and I've installed the crank, rads and all the pistons, One thing I noticed was the the main bearings covered a little bit of the oiling hole. So I filed the hole a little longer to uncover the hole. I had to do this with all the main bearings.

Yes, one of these thrust washers is backwards. I fixed it before installing the crank.

I installed the real crank seal. First I cleaned the surface with a razor blade. I like a single edge or a utility knife blade. I then used Mercedes Benz sealant on the surface. This the is black sealant in the tube that looks like a syringe.

Oil pump is next. I took it apart and packed the inside with bearing grease. This will help get oil pumping the first time I crank the engine.
